The six year old mare and daughter of KABOOL, STRONG SCENT. had to pull out all the stops to hold off the short priced favourite, CAT AND THE MOON in the listed Eastern Cape Challenge over 2000m.
The start was a good one but rather a sedate one with STARLIGHT BEAUTY from the favourite CAT AND THE MOON. After only two hundred metres RARE STONE was an early leader from GIFT OF RAIN and LUCKY LEAR. CAT AND THE MOON was eased back but was always in a challenging position throughout the race. The market rival BRIDE'S DOWRY was last for most of the race. CAT AND THE MOON always looked menacing and it was no surprise when she moved up in the home straight. STRONG SCENT went with her and in the latter stages was finishing the better, despite all the efforts made by the jockey. LUCKY LEAR stayed on for fourth.
The win was her fifth from twenty two starts. It was also her first win on the polytrack. Her earnings have now reached just over R300 000.
