The four year old son of WINDRUSH looked super impressive this afternoon when he won the first feature race of the season on the Highveld. After two poor runs with which to begin his career he was rested and gelded. Since gelding he has won three from four starts, of which two have been this C & D. It was a perfect run for trainer Stephen Moffatt, jockey Chase Maujean and for the owners, Messrs B and E Miskin. Jockey Maujean has struck up an excellent rapport with the four year old gelding.
The start was a very good one and the speed was on form the beginning. ISPHAN broke well and was always in contention, that is until ROMAN CARNIVAL swallowed him up at the 300m mark. It was a good effort from ISPHAN who was not disgraced in second, albeit four lengths back.
The pace of the race suited ROMAN CARNIVAL perfectly and must be a contender for feature race honours come late in September. VELVET VERONA was right up there in the initial stages but weakened late to finish down the field. DOING IT FOR DAN and JADE VINE finished further back. There was no late effort from MOOTAHADEE who could not respond to the early pace of the race.
The win by ROMAN CARNIVAL, his third from six starts, pushes his earnings just short of R300 000.
