Profile of the Month - Mike Bass

Mike Bass, 2008 Durban July joint winner, speaks to Equimark.

Well done on your win with Pocket Power, he must be the best Horse you have ever trained?

Yes I would say so

Did you think you had been beaten on the line to Dancers Daughter?

No I thought it was either a dead heat or we had won

What do you feel makes him such a Champion?

He`s a big horse with a big long stride and a huge girth which gives him plenty of heart and lung room. The rest comes from his pedigree which obviously clicked

What are the plans for Pocket Power next season?

Probably stay in SA and contest the same races again

River Jetez ran a great race, how similar is she in conformation and attributes to her brother Pocket Power, and can we expect further improvement from her?

Her conformation is quite different to his, she is quite tall and narrow although she is filling out more this season. She is improving all the time this year and will race again next year

Your record in the feature races is impeccable. As a trainer, what would you feel are the key factors in preparing big Horses for these races?

I like to build a horse up for a big race. Get them fit but still maintaining their strength.
