GAUTENG SANSUI SUMMER CUP (Grade 1) - MASTER SABINA bosses the finish in a cracker

There was another thrilling finish to the feature race programme at Turffontein this afternoon. MASTER SABINA was one of the half a dozen horses looking likely winners with 200m to go. There was an objection by the jockey of the second placed horse, Sean Cormack, and stable companion, JUDICIAL on the grounds of interference in the latter stages. The object was overruled.

The start to the Grade 1 event over 2000m was delayed for approximately two minutes while the tongue tie was refitted to MASTER SABINA. The loading process went without any hitches and the full field of twenty horses all broke well.

Conditioner Geoff Woodruff is no stranger to the winner's box in the Summer Cup. Last year he won with LOUIS THE KING. The CAPTAIN'S TUNE was the first to break the line from DIESEL JET and AHLAAM. YERMAAN was content to sit at the rear of the field. The early leader, CAPTAIN'S TUNE, was pulled out of the race with just over 1000m to go. There was a fourteen length gap between first and last at the 1200m marker. DYNAMIC improved his position around the turn.

The more fancied runners were never too far off the leading pack and with about 600m to travel there was a mad scramble for the lead with at least half the field looking to challenge for top honours. MASTER SABINA got going with 300m to go and was put under pressure by DEO JUVENTE who was running the race of his life. The favourite FRENCH NAVY looked menacing down the inside but had to be content with third. JUDICIAL ran another cracker while MAC DE LAGO found himself cramped and boxed in throughout the run in to the line. The July winner, POWER KING ran a creditable race in sixth.

The ride by Gavin Lerena was an excellent one and it is not surprising that he is the reigning champion jockey.

MASTER SABINA has now won eight races from twenty starts with his stakes earnings now over R2.3 million. This was his biggest win to date.
