Katelyn Mallyon joins Michelle Payne in the record books

Apprentice Katelyn Mallyon became only the second female in Victoria after Michelle Payne to outride her metropolitan claim when booting home Miss Cooper at Sandown Hillside on Wednesday.

The Matthew Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained filly raced on pace for Mallyon and dug deep to prevail by a half-length in thebigscreencompany.com.au Benchmark 63 3YO Fillies Plate (1600m).

Mallyon had only 10 days of her apprenticeship remaining to find that elusive 80th  winner and etched her name into the history books in the nick of time.

"I’ve been stuck on one (more winner) for about three weeks, nearly four weeks, so I’ve only got Saturday week to go,” Mallyon told Racing Victoria.

"I was running out of time. It’s good to be able to take the pressure off now.”

Mallyon’s grandfather Mick Mallyon is a former champion jockey, winning three Caulfield Cups - 1968 on Bunratty Castle, 1971 aboard Gay Icarus and 1974 on Leilani.

"Pop will be watching at home,” Mallyon said. "He will be very proud of me and I’ll have to go see him tonight and give him a big hug.”

This year’s Melbourne Cup winning jockey Michelle Payne was the first female apprentice in Victoria to outride her metropolitan claim, achieving that feat in 2005, but Mallyon has her eyes on another Victorian spring feature.

‘’I would love to win a Group I,” Mallyon said. "Any Group I winner, but the Caulfield Cup is definitely something I’d like to follow in my Pop’s footsteps and win.”
