South African Schofield to face charges for horse Sale dealings

Trainer Brent Stanley and jockey Glyn Schofield have been charged by Racing Victoria Stewards over the sale of then unraced two-year-old colt Equita.

A complaint was made to Racing Victoria stewards from one of the horse’s part-owners regarding the financial terms of the sale to Hong Kong interests.

Stanley was issued with four charges and Schofield one for their part in the sale of the colt.

Stewards have established that Stanley acted on behalf of the colt’s owners, which included Racing Victoria Chairman David Moodie, in sale negotiations while Schofield acted on behalf of the Hong Kong purchaser.

It has been alleged by Stewards that Schofield received $290,000 to pay for Equita but Stanley’s owners were advised and received funds for a $200,000 sale, with Stanley retaining $70,000 and Schofield $20,000.

Stanley’s wife Paris was also a part-owner of Equita.

The charges against Stanley under AR175(a)(g)(gg) relate to dishonest, fraudulent, corrupt, improper or dishonourable conduct and are considered severe.

Cranbourne trainer Dean Howard was disqualified for 18 months in 2015 after selling the talented galloper Convincible without the consent of the horse’s owners under similar charges.

Schofield has been charged under AR85C where a licensed jockey is not permitted to have any interest in buying, selling, trading or leasing thoroughbred bloodstock.

There does not appear to be a precedent around this charge in Victoria.

The charges against Stanley and Schofield will be heard by the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board on a date to be fixed. Racing.com
