Capitalist in Golden Slipper glory

A shock defeat in the Todman Stakes is now a distant memory for the connections of Capitalist as their two-year-old colt stood up when it mattered in the $3.5 million Golden Slipper at Rosehill Gardens.

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained juvenile reigned supreme on the biggest stage, defeating the fast-finishing Yankee Rose, with Flying Artie running third.

Blue Diamond Stakes winner and race favourite Extreme Choice finished eighth after a torrid run. He missed the start and was basically out of play moments after the barriers opened.

But the story of the race was Capitalist and his ability to rebound after being beaten as a $1.22 favourite at Randwick a fortnight ago.

“We thought we had a point to prove and thank God he backed us up because there is nothing better than letting the horse do the talking,” said Paul Snowden.

It was the first success in the Golden Slipper for Paul but his father Peter won it back in 2011 with Sepoy.

He too was beaten in the Todman Stakes before winning the grand final but this looked a more satisfying victory for the father-son training team given they are now operating their own stable, not preparing for the might of Darley.

“It is very special, especially the way it happened, he had a bit of trouble getting out but Blake (Shinn) had a lap full of horse and it looked like he had a lot to offer and once he got out it was a tremendous feeling and was so good to watch that last 200m,” Snowden added.

“The people who have backed us and our stable have been outstanding and I feel justified in their faith in us and return serving a win like today, it’s a great result.”

Shinn settled three pairs back along the fence aboard Capitalist, travelling on the back of Flying Artie before working clear in the straight.

It was his first success in the Golden Slipper and fitting giving his missed the ride on Sebring in 2008 due to suspension.

“Words can’t describe it, I’m so emotional. This is the best feeling ever,” Shinn said.

“This is one of the greatest races in the world and to be able to win it, I can’t thank everyone enough. This win is not just for me, it’s for everyone along the way who has helped me.

"We never wrote this horse off after his last-start defeat, you just have to have the faith and go in confident to every race.

“Full credit to this horse’s ability. He’s backed up from the Magic Millions and come here today.

“I was just saying to him ‘C’mon, just one more performance and he did it for me. I am so proud.”

Craig Newitt, rider of Extreme Choice, said he endured a disaster aboard the favourite.

“I don’t think he went 100m without getting interfered with,” he said.

"He got smashed out of the gates, another one before the corner when he started to make his run and even halfway up the straight the Godolphin horse ran straight over the top of him.

"For him to get as close as he did, his run was outstanding.” Racing.com
