Black Caviar Trainer quits, after suspension

Leading trainer Peter Moody has confirmed to stable clients on Monday that he will not return to training after serving his six months suspension received in the long running Lidari cobalt case.

Moody was cleared by the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary (RAD) Board on Wednesday of deliberately administering illegal levels of cobalt to Lidari, which would have delivered a mandatory three year disqualification if found guilty.

He was found guilty of the lesser charge of non-intentional administration of cobalt when Lidari finished runner-up in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington on October 4, 2014.

Moody was given a 12 month suspension, with 6 months suspended, when the penalty was handed down on Thursday. Lidari was disqualified from the race.

At Bendigo races on Saturday, Moody indicated that he would walk away from racing as he was struggling to come to a suitable arrangement with integrity officials as to the management of his stable during his suspension. Tensions were further added when Racing Victoria Chief Steward Terry Bailey would not rule out appealing the RAD Board ruling.

In correspondence to clients, Moody said that: "It is with much regret and a heartfelt decision that I have to inform you that I am going to recant my suggestion on Friday of where I said I would be back training in 6 months.

"After a lot of deliberation with my family and senior management staff, we didn’t feel it was going to be a viable or workable proposition to employ another trainer to care take the stable for the 6 month period of my suspension.

"RV worked with us at looking at putting it together, and it would have been possible but I just felt it was going to be very hard to make it workable and do the best by yourselves as the clients and more importantly by your horses.

"With this in mind I have made the ultimate decision that at this point in time I will not be returning to the training of racehorses in the foreseeable future."

Moody has left the door ajar slightly about a return to racing at some point after a lengthy break from the sport that he has devoted his life to.

"On behalf of myself, my wife Sarah and my staff we wish you every success in your future racing endeavours and we certainly won’t be lost to the industry but unfortunately it won’t be as a trainer. I will share the joys of racing with you as a part owner in a lot of the horses that we do race with you and hopefully we can have more success together," he said.

Moody will continue to work with clients to assist with the transferring of horses to other stables in the coming days. His suspension commences on Thursday. Racing.com
