Winx To Add Another Doncaster Mile To Waller’s Tally

Connections of super mare Winx are simply hoping the four-year-old avoids trouble when she contests this Saturday’s $3 million The Star Doncaster Mile (1600m) on Day 1 of the 2016 The Championships at Royal Randwick.

The dominant $1.85 favourite will start from barrier 11 for trainer Chris Waller’s quest to make it a fourth successive Doncaster victory, following wins by Sacred Falls (2013-14) and Kermadec (2015).

Part-owner Deb Kepitis said: “This will be a big test for Winx but Chris [Waller] has a great affinity with the Doncaster and when he said we’ll tackle the race, we just follow what he says.

“Hopefully she jumps fine and doesn’t find trouble. Hugh [Bowman] knows her very well so he’ll look after her.”

The mare’s record now stands at 12 wins and three 2nds from 18 starts, having accumulated $4.75m in prizemoney.

Darren Beadman, Godolphin’s assistant trainer to John O’Shea, is not ready to concede the Doncaster to Winx just yet, being represented by Irish-bred performer, Bow Creek ($15).

“The horse is perfect, he’s drawn a good barrier [4] and has an outstanding rider in James McDonald aboard.

“His two runs in Melbourne have been excellent and we couldn’t be happier with him. He is dropping back from 2000-metres but he’s a quality five-year-old and has won between 1400-metres and 1800-metres so the Doncaster distance will be just right for him.

“Hopefully he brings his good form to Randwick and will run a big race.”

Guy Mulcaster, who purchased last year’s Doncaster winner Kermadec, is confident the horse has bright claims to winning the race again.

“He gets a 1.5 kilo turnaround on Winx from last time but he’ll need to as he’ll carry 57 kilos whereas last year he won the Doncaster with just 51kg.

“The Doncaster is a levelling race so we expect Kermadec to be in the finish as he has been running well and his trackwork has also been very good.” Kermadec, with Zac Purton to ride, is a $6.50 chance.
