|
PREVIEW: GREYVILLE (NIGHT) (TURF/POLYTRACK) - 6 MAY 2016
RACE 1:
2-1-3-4-5
Many first timers. Watch the betting. MOSTARDA is a HORSE CHESTNUT two year old filly. Other first timers to keep an eye on are MERMAID MAMBO, POSTER GIRL, REINE DE L’ERMINE, who never showed on debut last time and ROARING FORTIES.
RACE 2:
5-1-7-8-9
RAND HEDGE has improved with each run. Top trainer and top jockey. GREAT VALUE is an ELUSIVE FORT first timer. STEVE RUBELL is a PHILANTHROPIST first timer. Both THE STAG KING and YORKSHIRE DALES are GREAT BRITAIN first timers but different yards.
RACE 3:
11-9-1-10-5
VICTORY TEAM made a fair debut last time. Will improve. Top trainer and top jockey. GREAT EXPECTATIONS has not shown in both starts. May improve tonight. DESTINED FOR DAWN has steady form but this will be his twenty eighth run. ROYAL ENCLOSURE did not show on debut at Turffontein last time. May improve in KZN. HIGH MAINTENANCE could be improving.
RACE 4:
3-1-6-5-10
TIME MARCHES ON is holding form well. Has won this C & D and has Cape Town's top jockey aboard. FLY PEG FLY enjoys a challenge. OSTENTATION is unbeaten this C & D (2 from 2). Will be doing her best work late. Top jockey rides. DEEP DOWN REBEL has more to find. NEWS FILTER showed good improvement last time.
RACE 5: THE INDEPENDENT ON SATURDAY DRILL HALL STAKES (Grade 2) - LEGISLATE to stamp his class
1-2-11-9-5
This race always produces a close finish.
Former Horse of the Year (2013/4), LEGISLATE, makes his third appearance for the KZN Winter Season. He may not have had the best of campaigns in Durban last year, but his class has never been in doubt. His season two years ago will not be forgotten when he won both The Daily News over 2000m and the Vodacom Durban July over 2200m. He is a versatile five year old son of DYNASTY and has won over distances ranging from 1200m to 2200m. He is returning from a rest, but class horses tend to handle the shorter distances on their return to the racetracks rather effortlessly. It is three months since he last ran. That day in the J & B Met was he far from disgraced , especially as he never recovered from a bad start. He did have his issues at the start on a few occasions last season in this part of the world. We have enjoyed this true champ as much as his owner from Cape Town, Justin Snaith, has enjoyed training him. A win tonight will push his earnings beyond R6 000 000. Anthony Delpech rides him for the very first time.. Seven wins and five seconds from only eighteen runs, many of which have been in Grade 1's speaks volumes about his ability.
ICE MACHINE was not at his best in his last two runs, both at Turffontein. he is better than his latest run and is a C & D suited runner. He has shown class and could give LEGISLATE a few "grey hairs" under lights at Greyville.
NEW PREDATOR was not disgraced when finishing third behind LEGAL EAGLE in the Horse Chestnut. We all know what LEGAL EAGLE did on Champions Day at Turffontein last time. Ignore this smart three year old colt at your peril. Well drawn and a dangerous Highveld contender.
SARATOGA DANCER will be finding more late and has won over the distance.
The Mike Bass trained, NIGHT TRIP meets LEGISLATE at level weights for a 1,40 length beating the last time they met at this track last season. He is well drawn in pole position. THE CONGLOMERATE, another Cape Town trained horse, from the Joey Ramsden yard, should not be ignored
RACE 6: DAISY FILLIES GUINEAS (Grade 2) - SILVER MOUNTAIN to atone for last two defeats
1-2-3-8-6
Greyville night racing has been festive affairs in recent times with very good crowds soaking up the mild to warm autumn evenings. Racegoers who will be attending tonight should be treated to some exhilarating racing, especially in the two Grade 2 events. One knows when the Winter Season is here when you have horses of the calibre of LEGISLATE, in the Drill Hall Stakes and SILVER MOUNTAIN in this race.
SILVER MOUNTAIN is a top class three year old daughter of SILVANO. She was unlucky when she took on the boys in the Grade 1 Cape Guineas at Kenilworth at the end of last year. She was cut into in that race but still managed to finish less than a length behind the winner, NOAH FROM GOA. This will be her first run in Durban, but not for her trainer, Mike Bass, who has a fantastic record in Durban during the Winter Season . Last time she was well supported in the $1 000 000 Cape Thoroughbred Sales at Kenilworth in January. She was surprisingly beaten close home that day. She has a very good late run. She has run only seven times for four wins but has earned a staggering R4.3 million. Big race and top jockey, Bernard Fayd'Herbe rides for the first time. Top horse, top chance.
Fellow Cape Town trainer, Justin Snaith, saddles BELA-BELA. This daughter of DYNASTY, won her first two but bumped SILVER MOUNTAIN and SMART CALL last time. We all know about both horses with the latter looking super-impressive at Turffontein last time. She may have quite a bit to find on SILVER MOUNTAIN, but she looks to be one that is almost guaranteed to show improvement in her next few runs. Top local jockey Anthony Delpech rides.
NEGROAMARO is also top class. She ran two excellent seconds in the first two legs of the Triple Tiara at Turffontein in her last two. She comes into this race as a highly rated three year old filly with a huge potential. Young trainer, Johan Janse Van Vuuren, certainly has a gem in his yard. Top Gauteng jockey Weichong Marwing has the ride.
My goodness me, another filly with class, INTERGALACTIC, from the Sean Tarry yard, has a money chance in this race. She has run against some useful sorts, namely INANINSTANT and INARA. Anton Marcus has the ride. She is extremely consistent.
FLYING ICE could sneak into the quartets. A Neil Bruss trained horse.Takes on stronger but in with a place chance.
RACE 7: CANON GUINEAS (Grade 2) - RABADA back at his favourite track
1-4-7-14-10
The Michael Azzie success story with ABASHIRI has not waned. One tends to forget the impact RABADA made when he burst onto the scene just over a year ago. Then he was touted as being a horse with a bright future. He confirmed that sentiment when he won his first three races, the second and third of which were at this track. He never really showed in his penultimate in Cape Town but returned to winning ways when winning over shorter. He has now won four from six, but more importantly, two were at this track, one of which over the same C & D. Ant6on Marcus has been aboard in all six runs. Expect another good effort from him. The draw of fourteen could be a worry but good horses can win from any draw.
BARITONE should not be too long in picking up a Grade 1. He is in good form and was not disgraced when just over two lengths behind NOAH FROM GOA in the Cape Guineas. He could be the big improver tonight. Justin Snaith trained and Bernard Fayd'Herbe to ride. Also drawn fairly wide.
Stable companion, IT’S MY TURN, is yet to be out of the first three in his five runs. He has won twice. This will be his first run in Durban. Yet again, another widely drawn runner. Grant Van Niekerk has the ride. What impressed last time was the way in which he finished when winning the Cape Derby last time.
Pick Six players from a few years ago would have had three for the price of one with the Justin Snaith runners! Yet another stable companion, BLACK ARTHUR, finished behind IT'S MY TURN last time. He finished 2.60 lengths behind him that day. He stayed on that day and looks to be capable of improvement on last time. Significantly, Anthony Delpech, has the ride for the first time. Whether he has been chosen as the third choice jockey or not will remain unanswered. Cannot be left out of anything now.
MUWAARY ran in the first two legs of the Triple Crown when finishing quite a distance behind ABASHIRI. He is better than that run and has shown a liking for this track. Mike De Kock on a feature race day can never be ignored, especially with Weichong Marwing aboard. Jockey Karl Zechner, fresh from his Triple Crown success with ABASHIRI, rides for current leading trainer in South Africa, Sean Tarry, when he climbs aboard PROSPECT STRIKE. He takes on stronger, but finished less than a length behind RABADA last time they met which was at this track in August.
RACE 8:
11-10-3-2-1
ROY’S VACATION showed huge improvement second time out last time. MEHMED lost four lengths at the start last time. Must have a say in this. IN THE MOMENT may improve with the blinkers. ROY’S AMAZING ASH will need to improve. SWEET TURN never showed last time after a decent penultimate run when baulked.
