GSB success continues with first Highveld winner

THE Green Street Bloodstock success story continued when Last Outlaw posted a commanding win in a Maiden Plate over the straight 1600m at the Vaal on Thursday, powering home 3.80-lengths clear of his opposition.

This was a first win in Gauteng for the fast up-and-coming racehorse syndication concern managed by Justin Vermaak, and there will undoubtedly be more to come.

Last Outlaw showed good pace throughout the race and quickened impressively with 300m to go to score as he liked for jockey Marco Van Rensburg.

“He was all at sea on his debut, he ran in behind horses and couldn’t find his stride, so I knew he’d be better for the experience,” said Van Rensburg, who was excited with what he’d felt underneath him.

“I am very pleased for the owners who came from around the country to the Vaal for this win,” said assistant trainer Chesney van Zyl, speaking for Gavin Van Zyl’s stable.

Justin Vermaak, who hosted an open day for clients and members of the syndicate including Last Outlaw’s owners Pieter Brown, Julian Spaans, Anthony Nel, Roger Grant and Nuno Pinto, commented: “We bought Last Outlaw for only R65,000 from Ascot Stud at the BSA Two-Year-Old Sale last year.

“Last Outlaw is by Sail From Seattle from a mare by Al Mufti. He’s from the immediate family of Yorker, Kiribati and Manipur. This is a very good damline, and I like the Sail To Seattle progeny. We bought more from Ascot Stud earlier this year.”
Another GSB runner, Inga, was beaten only half a length in a Juvenile Plate over 1400m, running against winners at Greyville last Saturday. She is one to keep an eye on as she should win soon.
