HARLEM SHAKE LANDS FINAL FLING

Trainer Glen Puller and apprentice Heavelon Van Der Hoven teamed up to win another Cape feature race when they landed Saturday’s G3 Final Fling Stakes at Kenilworth.

Having combined to win the inaugural CTS Million Dollar, the pair enjoyed another big day out thanks to the very game filly Harlem Shake, who made much of the running to land the R250 000 Final Fling.

Allowed to start at 12-1, and having to overcome a wide draw of 14, Harlem Shake was taken around to overtake early front runner Petty Officer and took the lead early on, from Fear Not and Petty Officer. Favourite Acrostar was settled just five lengths off the front runners, with the likes of Gift Of Rain and Indaba further back in running.

Turning for home, Harlem Shake had to dig down deep to withstand challenges from first Fear Not and then a determined late rally from the regally bred Icy Fire, but showed plenty of heart, under a strong rider from Heavelon, to prevail by a length and three quarters from rapidly improving 3yo Icy Fire, who just held off Sublime Lady to nab the runner up berth. Favourite Acrostar, who moved up menacingly at one stage, faded out to finish a well beaten eighth.

The winner stopped the clock in a time of 116.11.

Bred by Klawervlei Stud, Harlem Shake (who was capturing the first feature race of her career) has now won three of 13 outings –with her wins having come from 800m to 2000m.

Owned by Messrs Carruthers, Fourie, Robinson, Martin, Scholtz and Mrs Martin, she is a daughter of dual Gr1 winning sprinter Warm White Night and the Snippets mare Malakeh.

Remarkably, Harlem Shake was the first ever winner for her sire Warm White Night, whose first crop also produced the Gr2 Selangor Cup hero Hard Day’s Night.
