MARINARESCO BIDS FOR REDEMPTION

Talented three-year-old Marinaresco will bid to give his legendary trainer Mike Bass the perfect send off when he lines up in Saturday’s Gr1 Mike and Carol Bass Champions Cup over 1800 metres.Bass, a leader of his profession for decades, will be retiring after this race, and there could be no better way for him to retire than to saddle Marinaresco to win this R1 000 000 contest.

A rapidly improving three-year-old, Marinaresco won the first two legs of the Cape’s Winter Series, before looking a desperately unlucky loser (when second to The Conglomerate) of the 2016 G1 Vodacom Durban July. The gelded son of Silvano will be making his second appearance at Greyville on Saturday, but unfortunately (as was the case in the July), Marinaresco is drawn poorly and will jump from barrier 14.

Remarkably, Marinaresco is one of four sons of Silvano set to line up in the Champions Cup, with the others being last year’s runner up Ice Machine, recent Gr3 winner Punta Arenas and July disappointment St Tropez.Ice Machine, who tends to lose ground at the start, looks to have a tough task on his hands –not only does the 7yo have to carry top weight (Ice Machine will carry 60kgs) but has to jump from a wide outside draw of 15.Rising eight-year-old Punta Arenas gained well deserved compensation for his cruel July defeat when he won the Gr3 Delta Airlines 2200 on July day last time out. It was the gelding’s first win in over a year, but he clearly likes Greyville –Punta Arenas has already won over the course and distance of the Champions Cup.He is taking a step up in class here and may need to improve to beat some up and coming younger horses.Dual KZN Million Mile winner No Worries has really done his connections proud. To date, this son of Kahal has earned more than R2.82 million in prize money and shows no signs of stopping here. This versatile 7yo has been competing over distances ranging from 2400-1600m in his last 3 outings and has been as effective over all trips.

Ninth in this race last year, No Worries is a proven Gr1 contender and he could well be a contender here.Johannesburg veteran Judicial has been in good form this season but has yet to win a Grade One race after five previous attempts . He does, however, have the decided bonus of a good draw of 3. One of the talking horses before the G1 Vodacom Durban July, St Tropez proved bitterly disappointing in that race, and beat just one home (Solid Speed who bled finished last). Nothing obvious was found in that race, but it is hard to ignore the horses from the red hot Joey Ramsden yard, although on form St Tropez has plenty to find.Saratoga Dancer surprised many with a strong fifth in the recent Gr1 Vodacom Durban July, and the son of Mambo In Seattle could well run another big race here, even if he does look held by Marinaresco on their July run. He jumps from barrier one, and will be ridden by red hot apprentice Craig Zackey who partnered him in the July proper. A definite contender.

Another by Mambo In Seattle is talented 3yo Mambo Mime, who was quietly fancied in the July last time out. While he only finished tenth, the colt was beaten under four lengths by the winner, and could well have the scope for further improvement here. (He did finish in front of all of Dynamic, Rocketball and St Tropez in the July). The Dean Kannemeyer trained colt, however, will have to have luck in running to overcome a wide draw of 12.One three-year-old whose recent win has worked out really well is Champions Cup runner Exit Here. The son of Jay Peg’s win in the Gr3 Cup Trial was franked in no uncertain terms when fourth place finisher The Conglomerate won the G1 Vodacom Durban July, and third place finisher Saratoga Dancer (promoted when The Conglomerate was demoted to fourth) finished fifth in the July. With the beaten horses also including Punta Arenas, Exit Here could well show further improvement here. Gets the services of Weichong Marwing (who rode him to victory last time out), but has a wide draw of ten.

Dynamic was runner up to Exit Here, and in front of The Conglomerate and Saratoga Dancer, last time out. However, the son of Dynasty was unplaced in the July last time out and needs to improve on that showing.Former Gr1 SA Derby runner up Rocketball ran poorly when beating just 3 home in the July, and looks an outsider here, while the Snaith runner Baritone not only jumps in class but has a poor draw of 13 to overcome which should makes things tough for this well bred son of Trippi. The likes of Bezanova, It Is Written, Gold Onyx and the latter’s stable mate Malak El Moolook (who was receiving 5.5kgs from No Worries last time out) need big improvement to feature here.
