SINGER TO SHINE IN UMKHOMAZI STAKES

The filly Seattle Singer could give her male rivals something to think about when she takes part in the G2 Umkhomazi Stakes on Saturday.

Trained by Corne Spies, the daughter of ill-fated sire Sail From Seattle made a considerable impression when running second (against males) to the hugely impressive Always In Charge in the Gr1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion. Previously she had broken her maiden at Turffontein and also ran second to undefeated subsequent G1 winner The Secret Is Out in the Gr3 Strelitizia Stakes. Demoted to second after finishing first past the post on debut, Seattle Singer has been quite busy this season but her form suggests she should put up another bold showing from a good draw of two.

Her major opposition could come from the well bred Flying Myth (whose Gr3 winning dam is a half sister to champion sprinter Mythical Flight). A wide draw (of 11) however, won’t help this son of Trippi, who won the Listed Storm Bird Stakes on debut and recently won a juvenile plate in good style. Also third in the Gr3 Protea Stakes, Flying Myth does make his KZN debut here but is clearly above average and should run well with some luck in running.

Another raider with a chance is the undefeated Great Britain filly Wrecking Ball. A facile winner (albeit at long odds) over 1000m in open company first time out, Wrecking Ball confirmed her class with an easy 3.75 length win in a juvenile plate next time out.
She does take a step up in class here, and the form of her latest win remains questionable –the runner up Pinot Var having been beaten more than nine lengths in the G2 SA Fillies Nursery.

His stable companion (also by Great Britain) is the filly Queen Laurie, who is another taking a step up in class. A maiden winner last time out, Queen Laurie needs to improve on exposed form to feature here.

British Royale has done nothing wrong from his three outings (and ran second to the undefeated Bonnie Dawn last time out when conceding the winner 1 kg) but is another with a poor draw. The son of Great Britain tries the 1200m trip for the first time but his dam won up to 1600m and pedigree suggests the extra trip should not be a problem.

Highly rated Count Von Count pulled off a shock when scoring at odds of 50-1 last time out. The Visionaire gelding (a brother to Fillies Guineas winner Heaps Of Fun) is drawn well at three but steps up in class and has yet to win on turf.

Pricey yearling buy Hack Green (he cost R950 000 at last year’s Val De Vie Sale) caused a 16-1 upset when winning (in open company) on debut. A son of leading first crop sire Gimmethegreenlight, Hack Green’s maiden win was hardly franked when runner up Escovitch was beaten in both his subsequent outings while third place finisher Captain At Sea has not been out since that run.

His stable mate Rocky Valley ran fifth (beaten 4.75 lengths) to Buffalo Soldier (fourth in the G2 Golden Horseshoe subsequently) before winning next time out He is another trying the 1200m of Saturday’s race for a first time but does get the services of Anton Marcus and has a fair draw of seven.

The well tried Over Sure needs to improve to feature here, as does Outshine and Ocean Drive South.
