A son of the South African bred Gr1 winner Kournikova (Sportsworld) prevailed in Saturday’s Betfred Cambridgeshire at Newmarket.
The Brian Meehan trained Spark Plug (Dylan Thomas) made it win number four when romping home to score by two and a quarter lengths in Saturday’s prestigious and historic race.

Ridden by Jimmy Fortune, Spark Plug (who had suffered a crushing fall in the Royal Hunt Cup) charged up the stands' side rail to give Fortune his second win in the prestigious and valuable handicap.

Fortune, who had previously won the race aboard Pipedreamer, said after the race, “I had to take a pull two out, it stopped him getting there too soon. He's always been a bit of a worrier and Brian has done a wonderful job to get him back after his fall at Ascot.
"I've known Brian for the last 25 years, we've been great friends and long may it continue!”

The Cambridgeshire is one of the oldest and most historic horse-races in Britain. First run in 1839, the 1800m event along with the Cesarewitch is known as the Autumn Double and regularly provides punters with memorable results. Among the more notable winners of the race were subsequent European champion Halling (Diesis), subsequent Eclipse Stakes hero Henry The Seventh (King Of The Tudors), and the legendary sire Polymelus (

The five-year-old Spark Plug is out of the top class Kournikova, who downed the legendary Ipi Tombe (Manshood) when successful in the 2002 Gr1 Triple Tiara 1600. The Patrick Kruyer trained filly won five of her 20 races, with her other notable performances including a win in the Listed Drum Star Stakes over Gr1 Summer Cup winner Wolf Whistle.

Spark Plug aside, Kournikova is also the dam of the stakes winners Pearl Of Africa (Jeremy) and Slight Advantage (Peintre Celebre).
