SA SIRES MAKE THE MARK OVERSEAS

A number of South African based stallions have enjoyed considerable success over seas in 2016.
From the likes of Philanthropist, Duke Of Marmalade and Oratorio to Linngari, Trippi and Flower Alley, South African based sires have left a large number of international black type winners overseas in recent times.

Duke Of Marmalade
Currently standing at Drakenstein Stud, former Cartier Champion Duke Of Marmalade has more than made his mark at stud overseas, with his stakes winners including such classic winners as Nutan, Star Of Seville and Simple Verse. Winner of last year’s Gr1 Ladbrokes St Leger, Simple Verse has once again enjoyed top level success in 2016, with her wins including the Gr2 DFS Park Hill Stakes. She is one of eight international stakes winners this year for Duke Of Marmalade, whose son Big Orange is currently one of the leading fancies for November’s Gr1 Emirates Melbourne Cup.

Flower Alley
The only sire of a Kentucky Derby winner (I’ll Have Another) ever to come to stud in South Africa, Flower Alley has once again enjoyed major international success during 2016, with his runners including G1 Gulfstream Park Handicap hero Lukes Alley. To date, the latter has won or placed in 12 of his 14 outings, and has banked over $750 000 in prize money. Flower Alley’s son, I’’ll Have Another, has made a pleasing start with his first 2yos this year in Japan, where he is currently the second leading first crop sire by earnings.

Linngari
A handsome, and extremely versatile, chestnut son of former top sprinter Indian Ridge, Linngari (pictured) is currently standing at Summerhill Stud. He has been represented by a top class French galloper this year in the form of Garlingari –a five-year-old who won both the Gr2 Prix d’Harcourt and Gr3 Prix Exbury in 2016. Garlingari, who has won six races from 2000-2400m, also ran third in the Gr1 Prix Ganay and has won or placed in no fewer than seven group races during 2016.

Oratorio
Danehill’s triple Gr1 winning champion son, who stands at Avontuur Estate, has enjoyed yet another good season in 2016, where his overseas runners include the Australian Group 3 winner Sons Of John and last Friday’s black type winner Hawke.
He is also damsire of Gr3 winning filly Dolce Strega (Zoffany) and Listed Dee Stakes hero Viren’s Army (Twirling Candy).
Oratorio, whose Gr1 Dewhurst Stakes runner up son Fencing Master is also at stud in the Western Cape, made a huge impact with his first South African yearlings last season, when they fetched up to R3.2 million.

Philanthropist
A former Leading Sire on Synthetics in North America, Philanthropist (whose first local runners include the sensational debut winner Singapore Sling) is currently North America’s second Leading Synthetics Sire by stakes. The strapping son of Kris S has been represented by 68 winners in North America this year, including stakes winners Generous Touch (who has won three feature races in Canada this year), and Hot Kiss.

Trippi
Last season’s Champion South African sire, Trippi has been in the international news of late as the broodmare sire of exciting US two-year-old, and potential Breeders’ Cup contender, Not This Time (Giant’s Causeway). A half brother to Gr1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt hero and Lane’s End sire Liam’s Map (Unbridled’s Song), Not This Time has won two of his three outings to date, and, last time out, romped to an 8.75 length victory in the Gr3 Iroquois Stakes at Churchill Downs.
