Secret Looks to Emulate Sister in Fillies Championship

The Choice Carriers Fillies Championship traditionally provides punters with clues for the Gr1 World Sports Betting Cape Fillies Guineas.

This year’s renewal looks to be extremely competitive, with a number of the more fancied runners suffering from poor draws. The Secret Is Out (Captain Al) will be looking to emulate her champion full sister All Is Secret –who won the Choice Carriers back in 2012. However, the undefeated Gr1 Allan Robertson Fillies Championship winner (who will be trying the 1400m trip for a first time) has a shocking draw of 12 to overcome. The grey will also be making her first racetrack appearance since June.

Joint top rated for the race, Gr2 Gold Circle Golden Slipper heroine Final Judgement (Judpot) will be looking to establish her classic claims with a bold showing here. However, she is another coming off a lengthy layoff –and needs to confirm her 20-1 win in the Golden Slipper. A fair draw of six will be in her favour –and trainer Glen Kotzen is no stranger to winning this race! Her blue blooded stable mate Party Crasher (Philanthropist) is a half sister to 2013 Choice Carriers winner In The Fast Lane. A winner on debut (the form of that win has not worked out), Party Crasher was a little unlucky when a close up fourth next time out but does take a big step up in class and Final Judgement appears the right one of the Kotzen pair.

There is not much separating Final Judgement from Sail (Philathropist). The latter was a fast finishing third to the Kotzen filly, beaten under a length, in the Gr2 Golden Slipper and had Final Judgement five lengths behind her when third in the Gr1 Thekwini Stakes to the very talented Querari Falcon (Querari). Sail is making her Cape debut, but is well drawn and hails from a yard with a proven strike rate in Cape features and should be respected.Justin Snaith has two runners in a race he won three years ago with In The Fast Lane. They include talented, but diminutive The Merry Widow (Captain Al), who won her first three in a row as a 2yo. Her wins included the Listed Perfect Promise Sprint and Listed East Cape Nursery but she was beaten in all three of her graded attempts in KZN. Beaten six lengths (when jumping from the widest draw of all) the only other time she attempted the trip, The Merry Widow gets the services of former champion jockey Gavin Lerena.

Her stable mate, Red Light Girl (Captain Al), has a shocking draw of 15, which could make things very tough for this beautifully bred filly- she is out of former Gr1 Thekwini Stakes winner Roxanne and is bred on the same cross as star sprinter Carry On Alice. However, she has done nothing wrong in her brief career, and if she can overcome the draw, Red Light Girl should run well. Candice Bass-Robinson, whose yard sent out Silver Mountain (Silvano) to win this race 12 months ago, has three runners here. Last out winner Felicity Flyer (Noordhoek Flyer) has a poor draw of 13 to overcome, while Extradite (Mambo In Seattle) has ground to find with all of The Secret Is Out, The Merry Widow, Red Light Girl and O Tamara (Argonaut).

Stable jockey Grant Van Niekerk takes the ride on Whose That Girl (Gitano Hernando), who looked promising at two when flying up late for second in the Listed Irridescence Stakes. She ran on well over an inadequate trip of 1200m last time out and she could be the dark horse here. Visiting Eastern Cape trainer Alan Greeff saddles O Tamara (Argonaut) in Saturday’s race. A top class 2yo in the Eastern Cape last season, when she reeled off a hatrick of wins culminating in the Gr3 Champion Juvenile Cup, O Tamara was fifth, beaten under 2 lengths, on her seasonal debut –but takes on much stronger here and does not have a great draw.Another visitor to the Cape is champion trainer Mike de Kock who will saddle the regally bred Australian Ektifaa (More Than Ready). While it is dangerous to ever overlook a runner from this powerful yard, Ektifaa, who has won her last two in a row –in weaker company, has a tough task at the weights and is not helped by a poor draw of ten.

Smokey Affair (Elusive Fort) has long been something of a talking horse, and this Michael Robinson trained filly has done nothing wrong in a brief career. While she is another rising in class, Smokey Affair impressed last time out when defeating older horses over 1400m at Durbanville. Rated highly by connections, Smokey Affair is well drawn in barrier two and should run well here. Her stable mate Pint Pot (Judpot) is coming off a maiden win and is hard to fancy in this company while California Girl (Trippi) is undefeated in two outings and could well be better than rated.
