2016 Melbourne Cup – TRAINERS AND JOCKEYS HAVE THEIR SAY

Just off the plane from winning the Tenno Sho aboard Maurice in Japan on Sunday, Ryan Moore has arrived in Melbourne and is fully aware of what it takes to win a second Cup.

The leading English jockey, who won the Melbourne Cup in 2014 aboard Protectionist, is in town to ride Bondi Beach for Aidan O'Brien.

Bondi Beach, who finished 16th in the Melbourne Cup last year, is rated a $10 chance.

"He has been trained for the race, everyone seems happy with him, he is in good shape," Moore said.

"The trip shouldn't be a problem, he has had experience coming here before, I think it will stand him in good stead, he has a good stall, he will need a lot of luck but I'm sure he will run well.

"This race has been the plan since last year, and everyone is happy and if we get a bit of luck he will go close."

Racing.com obtained commenst from the connections.

1 – BIG ORANGE 57kg

Trainer: Mike Bell: Big Orange is 17 hands and about 550kgs but has only just grown up according to Bell. ‘’He was only four when he was out here last year and he was on a big learning curve, but since he’s been out this year, he’s become a man.’’

Jockey: Jamie Spencer: "My horse is a rhythm horse, it is all about where he is comfortable and where he is happy. If that means we are in a forward position so be it. We learned a lot from the experience last year and the horse is going better this time around."

2 – OUR IVANHOWE 57kg

Trainer: Lee and Anthony Freedman: Lee said: "We'll probably be a bit more aggressive on him from a good draw on Tuesday. You have to make use of those sort of horses, and trust they'll finish off anyway. I think this horse doesn't need to be right on top of the pace, but he needs to be first half of the field."

Jockey: Dwayne Dunn: “We need the forecasted rain, and hopefully it comes”

3 – CURREN MIROTIC 56.5kg

Trainer: Osamu Hirata: Has been training for 11 years, has about 50 horses in work and describes himself as a ‘’mid-grade’’ trainer in Japan. ‘’He is one of the best stayers in Japan at the moment and so he’ll make it a true staying test.’’

Jockey: Tommy Berry: "I'm happy with the way he is going, he will get out and set a solid temp and as long as it is a true staying test, I think he can be in the finish. He hasn't got any sprint in his legs, so we need to make it a genuine test."

4 – BONDI BEACH 56kg

Trainer: Aidan O'Brien

Owner Lloyd Williams: "Aidan is pretty happy with the horse at Werribee. He was an immature three-year-old last year. It was my idea to bring him out last year, and probably it was the wrong idea."

Jockey: Ryan Moore: ‘’He’s been trained for the race. Everyone seems very happy with him. He’s in good shape. The trip shouldn’t be a problem. He’s had experience coming here before and that will hold him in good stead.’’

5 – EXOSPHERIC 56kg

Trainer: Lee and Anthony Freedman

Lee said: "His closing effort in the Caulfield Cup wouldn't instil any fear into you, so he's certainly worth taking his place. He lost a fair bit of weight in the Caulfield Cup, but he replaced it quickly. I think hopefully the winning move is that we moved him straight from quarantine to Pinecliff, and I think that rural environment has been very good for the horse."

6 – HARTNELL 56kg

Jockey: James McDonald: "I think barrier 12 is excellent for us as it gives me options. Unlike last year, I think the race will be run at a genuine tempo. With that in mind, I'll be hoping to settle just ahead of midfield. The key will be getting him to settle and switch off early, if that happens he is going to be very hard to hold out."

7 – WHO SHOT THEBARMAN 56kg

Trainer: Chris Waller: "I thought the run at Moonee Valley was good for both horses, it is good timing in terms of what they need to do, it has them fit and has them sharp, they are nice and fresh leading in to the race, we didn't need to get any fitness in to them, that was done at Moonee Valley."

Jockey: Hugh Bowman: "He has run a place in the Melbourne Cup before, so he's proven at the trip. Track conditions are going to suit him. Awkward draw, of course. I'm going to ride him to get the nice run midfield somewhere depending on how quick they're going, and it's all about having a smooth run in transit really."

8 – WICKLOW BRAVE 56kg

Trainer: Willie Mullins: An Irish training legend, he liked what he saw of his horse when he arrived in Melbourne late last week. ‘’The work he did (last Saturday) was a huge bit of work. If he can repeat that work on Tuesday he’s going to give a good account of himself.’’

Jockey: Frankie Dettori: ‘’I like to think he’s got a chance. He’s a good stayer. Barrier 24 didn’t help but I’m hoping for a big run.’’

9 – ALMOONQITH 54.5kg

Trainer: David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig: “This year he was always qualified for the race, so we always knew he was in. We didn’t have to rush him and qualify him peak him before the race, so we’re very happy with him. I thought his run in the Caulfield Cup was excellent. Speaking to dad and Tom we’re really confident we’ve got him spot on and he’s ready to run a big race.”

10 – GALLANTE 54.5kg

Trainer: Robert Hickmott

Owner Lloyd Williams said: "I'm keen on Gallante. I was so disappointed last week at Moonee Valley, because he was given absolutely no chance whatsoever. They were running 11.5-second splits from the 1600m to the 1200m, with that horse driving him mad on the outside. Fortunately he's come out of that race terribly well. He went to Bendigo with us on Saturday morning as well, and you couldn't be happier with him.

11 – GRAND MARSHAL 54.5kg

Trainer: Chris Waller: "Grand Marshal is an extreme distance horse, which is required, but I think the Sydney Cup form is a couple of lengths inferior to the Melbourne Cup, I'm hoping it is a true staying test may help both my horses."

12 – JAMEKA 54.5kg

Trainer: Ciaron Maher: "Obviously the lighter the better, it's a handicap, and you're always trying to beat the handicappers. But I thought the 1.5kg [penalty] was fair enough for the Caulfield Cup. Obviously any weight makes a difference, I think. She's a big strong free-flowing horse, so it'll have some effect, but hopefully not enough to stop her from winning."

13 – HEARTBREAK CITY 54kg

Trainer: Tony Martin: From an Irish stable where plunges are plentiful and plans are well made. ‘’When he did what he did at York (win the Ebor Handicap) there was only one place we were thinking about. I think he can win the Melbourne Cup.’’

Jockey: Joao Moreira: The Brazilian legend had his first ride on Heartbreak City on Saturday morning. ‘’He feels fit and feels like he is carrying enough condition to be going out there and perform at his best.’’

14 – SIR JOHN HAWKWOOD 54kg

Jockey: Blake Spriggs: "His work Tuesday was red-hot; they don't work any better than that. I think anyone running in an Oakleigh Plate would be happy with those sorts of times, 22.3 [last 400m]. If he can have a cosy run and run those sorts of sectionals coming into the straight at the end of 3200m, he's going to be in the finish."

15 – EXCESS KNOWLEDGE 53.5kg

Trainer: Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott

Bott said: "It's one of the biggest positives with him going into the race - getting back to the Flemington track. The tight-turning Moonee Valley track didn't really suit him. Back to Flemington, we know he's performed well here previously. His run in the Melbourne Cup [seventh] was huge last year. He's won the Lexus. He really appreciates getting back to this track."

16 – BEAUTIFUL ROMANCE 52.5kg

Trainer: Saeed Bin Suroor: "The filly is doing really good. She's a Group 2 winner in England, and she's third last time out also. She's doing really well, a good draw, and we're looking for a good run. He [Damian Lane] likes her, he was very positive about her. That's a good sign. So far, so good.

Jockey: Damian Lane: "I know she's a quality mare, and she's got some great formlines around her. I think she won't be too far away from the speed, and I think she'll be getting a lovely run from barrier one to give her a chance late."

17 – ALMANDIN 52kg

Trainer: Robert Hickmott

Owner Lloyd Williams said: "In the old fashioned sense, he's beaten the handicapper. If you were handicapping him today, I'd give him 54.5kg or 55kg. So he's well treated. He's a horse that was off the scene for a while. When he first came here, he had better form than Protectionist, but unfortunately had a tendon and was off the scene for quite a long way. He's the horse you want to rate up."

Jockey: Kerrin McEvoy: “I’ve got some nice confidence in the horse, I’m really pleased with him. It just looks a nice race for him, he drops nicely in weight and he’s had a nice little freshen up going into the big race tomorrow.

18 – ASSIGN 52kg

Trainer: Robert Hickmott

Owner Nick Williams: "I'm not that fussed about the draw. It doesn't matter if she's slow away, she'll be able to stride forward down the straight and get herself into a spot. She's got Frankie [Dettori on Wicklow Brave] who's probably going to go forward outside of her there. She understands pace so well, she'll work it out."

Jockey: Katelyn Mallyon: “I know the horse [Assign] well, and I’m really looking forward to getting aboard him tomorrow. I’m feeling pretty relaxed, and I’ve got 2 rides before the Melbourne Cup so I’ll get a good look at the track

19 – GREY LION 52kg

Trainer: Matt Cumani: A Cup first-timer, who is looking to make amends for his father Luca’s near misses. ‘’He’s shown a lot of character and heart since he’s been out here and I can’t fault how he’s come on since Geelong.’’

Jockey Glen Boss: "The Geelong Cup form looks a little stronger now than what people may have believed at the time with Oceanographer winning the Lexus in good fashion last Saturday. We've drawn to have plenty of room in the run and I think that will suit the horse because to me he looks like he wants to build in to the race. He is an outside chance that may surprise."

20 – OCEANOGRAPHER 52kg

Trainer: Charlie Appleby: "I was delighted to see him this morning (Monday), since his run he hasn't left an oat. He looked well yesterday and he went around again today and had an easy canter. His rider said he felt great and visually he looks like he has come through the run well. Unfortunately we won't know how he handles the back-up until the gates open but all the signs are good at this stage. When horses are on an upward curve you don't know where they can end up."

21 – SECRET NUMBER 52kg

Trainer: Saeed Bin Suroor: "After Australia we gave him a break, as he had a hard season last year. We gave him a race [Doonside Cup] in Scotland, and he won really well. That's the race that helped him prepare for the Melbourne Cup. The horse travelled really well, worked nicely, he's in good form, good condition. The draw is good also."

Jockey: Stephen Baster: "I've looked at his form and I watched his run here [last year]. He looks to be quite an impressive horse, so fingers crossed he can run an impressive race. He raced a little bit keen in his run here, and since then, he's been gelded and got the hood on [blinkers] now. And he apparently had a very impressive win when he went home [to the UK], so he looks like he's improved."

22 – PENTATHLON 51.5kg

Trainer: John Wheeler who trained Veandercross to run 2nd in 1992, but saddling first runner for 20 years. ‘’He stays and that’s half the worry with this race. I’m under no illusions as to how hard it will be, but he’s game and honest.’’

23 – QEWY 51.5kg

Trainer: Charlie Appleby: "He did nothing wrong at Geelong, he was back in distance that day to a mile and a half and we know what he can do at two miles and even further back home. He is a very straight forward horse, he wears his heart on his sleeve and he is an easy horse to train. He brought the better form over here (compared to Oceanographer) for sure but Oceanographer has always threatened and he has thrived."

Jockey: Craig Williams: "For him to come out here and win the Geelong Cup, which has been a great success story for European horses to have one run here to have the experience... as well as winning it, Dunaden, Americain, Media Puzzle. Since then, he's incurred a penalty to get into it. I saw him at Ascot when James [McDonald] rode him in a 4000m race, he was ridden from second-last and finished second. When he ran at Goodwood, he was midfield and stayed on nicely. The horse that finished seven lengths off him [Francis of Assisi], dominated the Bendigo Cup."

24 – ROSE OF VIRGINIA 51kg

Trainer: Lee and Shannon Hope: Lee Hope said: ‘’She’s well and she runs the two mile and it’s just great to have a runner in the race. It’s clearly going to be hard but she’s pretty tough and we’re going for a top 10 finish.’’

Jockey: Ben Thompson: “It really means a lot to me, obviously it’s a huge privilege. A lot of jockeys wait their whole life to hope for a ride, let alone have one at 19, I’m still pinching myself. I wouldn’t change it for a thing, it’s unreal.”
