Ladies in Racing: Veronica Jack

Ladies in Racing is a feature on some of the stand out female figures we have in our industry. SA Horse Racing recently took time out to speak to Gold Circle’s Veronica Jack, a long time racing enthusiast and a member of Gold Circle’s Executive Team. This is 'Ladies in Racing' .

How did you get involved in horse-racing?

My dad was an avid punter and so I took a keen interest in horse racing. While studying at University, I worked on-course as an operator. It was the perfect part time job for a student back then. I began working at Gold Circle (ex TAB), in 1996 as an Accounts Clerk and worked my way up from there.

What do your daily duties involve?

I am a member of the Executive team at Gold Circle, currently heading up the Corporate Services Division. My portfolio includes overseeing and leading the Human Resources, Payroll, Transformation and Security departments. I have a great team of capable managers reporting into me and part of my responsibility is to provide them with direction to exercise their respective functions. In addition, I am responsible for ensuring that compliance and regulatory requirements in respect of my various areas of responsibility are formulated, approved (by the Executive team and the Board where necessary), implemented and adhered to. I note that it might sound quite bureaucratic to most especially in the racing industry which is so exciting, however the industry is highly regulated and compliance is essential.

What is the favourite part of your job and why?

I engage with people throughout the day, both from within the organisation as well as external stakeholders. I love the constant human interaction especially the satisfaction that comes from helping someone solve a problem.

Are your family/friends interested/involved in racing?

Yes, I have a few family and friends that own shares in race horses.

Who has inspired you in racing?

There are a number of people that I admire in racing due to their love and passion for the industry and the thoroughbred and their commitment to ensuring the sustainability of the industry. However, one individual made an impact on me from the first day I met him and has ever since. I am inspired by Mickey Goss, the owner and founder of Summerhill Stud and the School of Excellence, for his dedication and commitment to empowerment and enriching the lives of those wishing to grow in the industry. Further, his accomplishments both on the track, in the barn yards and on the podium are an inspiration.

What is your background?

My core skill is Finance having worked in the Finance Department at Gold Circle for the last 19 years. Over the last 6 years, I held the position of Finance Executive. Since March this year, I welcomed the change in my portfolio to Corporate Services Executive mainly because of my passion for working with people which the current position allows me to fulfil more actively.

How long have you worked at Gold Circle?

Officially 20 years, but I’ve been involved in the industry for the last 26 years

Do you feel women are overlooked sometimes in racing, and do you feel that they could be promoted better?

There are a number of women that have made their mark in racing, the likes of Mary Slack and Dr. Phumla Mnganga, both of whom, I admire greatly. Racing has historically been a male dominated industry however from my experience, there has not been any concerted effort to keep women from rising to the top if they want to and are able. However, a more concerted effort needs to be made by industry role players to get women more actively involved in the industry which I believe will benefit the industry at large.

What, if anything, would you like to change in racing/your job?

I enjoy what I do and look forward to each working day. "If you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life." - Marc Anthony.

As far as racing is concerned, I wish we could formulate and implement a strategy that will increase interest in racing, attendance at the racecourse as well as improve turnovers which will benefit all stakeholders especially owners and trainers who make a significant contribution to the industry.

Do you have a favourite race and if so, why?

Like many others, I look forward to the Durban July, the greatest horse racing event in Africa. Every year seems to get better than the year before. It’s great being part of the buzz of excitement at Greyville Racecourse leading up to the event. The event brings the best horses in the country to Kwazulu Natal contributing to an exciting racing season. I enjoy talking to family and friends about the event as it draws closer and I am proud to say, that’s where I work.

Do you own any horses at the moment, and if so, who are they with?

Last year, I purchased a minor share in a horse called Forceful Rush, thanks to Graeme Hawkins. My co-owners are fellow colleagues from Gold Circle and Forceful Rush is doing well under the guidance of trainer Garth Puller. He’s won a few races and the elation I experienced when he passed the finish line was priceless. I’m looking forward to watching him progress.

What ambitions/goals do you have in racing?

I wish I had the money to make a greater investment in horse ownership as the thrill and excitement of your horse winning a race is phenomenal. On looking at the connections who often win, I think that must be the ultimate symbol of success in our industry.

On the people side, my goal is to improve the lives of those in the industry that live below the threshold.

What advice would you give to women keen on getting involved in horse-racing?

There are various careers in racing that can be explored so consider it as an option and find the direction that suits you best whether it be on the track or in the office. Being involved in the industry can be challenging for men and women alike but it’s great to be a part of it. Never give up on your dreams and aspirations and hard work can lead to success.
