LADIES IN RACING –CANDICE DAWSON

SAHorseracing were lucky enough to speak to rising training star Candice Dawson about her hopes  for the future and her past experiences with some of South Africa’s top trainers. Here is what Candice had to say:

How did you get involved in racing?
I knew from a very early age that I just wanted to work with horses, so I ended up being the youngest girl at the time on Mitch Hansen's Horsemastership course. One of the perks was that if you finished in the top two, you got to study with Winks Greene, I was lucky enough to do just that.  I have always loved racing, and was very fortunate that when I finished with Winks, she and Mitch got me a job with Mike Airey.

Is your family involved in the sport?
My dad had a couple of racehorses when we were really young, and he used to give myself and my sisters the option at 4 in the morning before school, of either going to the track to watch his horses work, or being his caddy at the golf course (you can guess what we used to pick! lol ) that was my introduction.  Tammy, my middle sister has spent many years working alongside me with Geoff Woodruff.  During that time, we were a part of winning 5 Trainers Championships.  My youngest sister also worked with us at Geoff, before deciding to go into the corporate world.

What is your background with horses?
I started riding when I was 6. Lucky for my parents, they had three horse mad daughters!   I competed in show jumping and eventing and loved schooling polo ponies in my spare time.

Winning the Flamingo Mile must have been a big thrill? Is Sundari the best in your yard at the moment?
It was marvellous, and everybody involved was so accommodating and friendly, and all wished us well.   I wouldn't say he’s my best horse, but best "Sand Horse" for sure

You have worked with a number of trainers over the years. How long were you with likes of Mike Airey, Kom Naidoo and Geoff Woodruff?
I have been very fortunate to have worked with top Trainers.  In 1997 I started with Mike Airey as a stable employee and was also doing physio for his horses. A year later I decided to leave and join Geoff Woodruff’s yard, as my sister was working there, and I knew that I would be able to continue to learn. I spent about 10 years working for Geoff.    I joined Alyson Wright, and was then offered the opportunity to run a satellite yard in JHB for Kom Naidoo. I was blessed to work with such amazing people and great horsemen.

How did you come to train in Mauritius and what was that experience like?
When Kom had to close up shop in JHB, I got the opportunity to be an assistant trainer in Mauritius. The experience was invaluable in that I got to see how horses cope in such a unique environment.  I loved it. Eventually I became one of only two women to ever hold a licence there.

What was the most important lesson you learned with them and why?
I must say Geoff Woodruff is an incredible horseman, and was always willing to share his insight and knowledge with us. In saying that, I would like to think I have taken experience from everyone I have worked with. To name one lesson would be hard, as I have learnt so very many in this industry and hopefully will continue to do so.  I think that one of the most important things that I have learnt over the years, is that every horse is an individual and should be treated as such.

Who is the best horse you have worked with?
I have been lucky enough to have worked with many champions over the years, including Jet Master, El Picha, Yard Arm, Eventuail, Promisefrommyheart,   Paraca and RoyalZuluWarrior.  As you can see, to name just one would be difficult, but Eventuail and RoyalZuluWarrior hold a special place in my heart.

What do you look for when buying a horse?
The horse must have a good walk and as the power comes from the hind quarters, I consider this very important.  I like to think that a good horse gives me a feeling the minute they walk out the box.

How did you get involved with the Ralphs?
I became friends with Kathryn when I was training for Kom in Jhb.  We met again while I was in Mauritius and Kathryn came up with the engaging idea of setting up a racing business back in South Africa.  Her father became interested in the idea and after leaving Mauritius, the ideas grew into a reality

Have you ever felt that being a woman was a disadvantage in racing?
I believe that as women we may have to work a little harder to achieve what we want, but it only makes us stronger.

What advice would you give a woman keen on getting involved with racing/training?
It is all hard work and perseverance.  I started from the bottom and as such, it allowed me to see all aspects of horse racing.  I feel, skipping steps in this industry, or any industry, will likely be a shortfall.
Is there any person/people who inspire you in the game, and, if so, why?
Mr Millard has been one of the biggest inspirations for me as he was such a good mentor.  I am truly inspired by Kathryn and Mr Ralphs enthusiasm for horse racing and especially their love for their horses.

What big race would you like most to win?
Any Breeders Cup race in the US would be fine, but for now, I’ll take any race, anywhere, thanks.

Do you have a favourite racecourse?
My favourite course is whichever one suits my horse on the day.

How many horses would you ideally like to train?
I don’t like to be restricted by numbers.  I know the way I want my horses managed so the more people and horses we can get involved, the better chances we have at developing champions. Kathryn and I are very fortunate to have a great group of owners who have been very encouraging.  I would like to thank them all for their valued support.
