TELLINA SCORES IN GERMANY

The Maine Chance Farms bred Tellina (Silvano) continued the run of success that South African bred horses have enjoyed overseas in recent weeks when romping to a 14 length win in Germany on Saturday.

Other South African bred winners to score overseas recently include Captain Lars (successful over 1000m in Britain at the end of December), Listed Singspiel Stakes hero Light The Lights (Western Winter), and Five Up High (Sail From Seattle). The latter, a half brother to champion Soft Falling Rain (National Assembly), picked up his third Hong Kong when victorious for Tony Millard at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Tellina gained his first victory on German soil when landing the Preis der Neusser Trainingzentrale conditions race on the all weather course at Neuss.

Second in the German St. Leger in Dortmund back in September, the Andreas Wohler trainedTellina proved that the drop down in distance to 1500 metres was no issue when coming home a mightily impressive 14 length winner under jockey Jozef Bojko and he is now expected to be among the favourites for his next scheduled race, the Group 2 Grosser Preis von St. Moritz on the unique frozen lake at the famous Swiss ski resort on Sunday 26th February.

Tellina, whose South African wins included both the G2 Gauteng Guineas and G3 London News, had been campaigning in Dubai previously.

He also made history when running third to fellow Maine Chance Farms bred Silvano sons Power King and Punta Arenas in the 2015 Gr1 Vodacom Durban July and placed in a total of no fewer than nine Gr1 races in South Africa.

The gelding is out of the Spectrum mare Tachina-whose fourth dam Cockade (Derring Do) was a full sister to 2000 Guineas winner and successful sire High Top (Derring Do).

This is also the family of champion Old Vic (Sadler’s Wells), winner of both the French and Irish Derbies.
