MAC DE LAGO BROTHER IMPRESSES

A half-brother to Gr1 Sun Met hope Mac De Lago (Encosta De Lago) impressed when winning at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.
Three-year-old Gauguin (Dalghar), making just his second outing, led all the way to land a maiden over 1400m by half a length in the style of a horse going places.

Ridden by South African born jockey Glyn Schofield, the gelding holds some big race entries, and is a potential contender for such races as the Gr1 ATC Rosehill Guineas and Gr1 ATC Australian Derby.

Gauguin’s trainer James Cumming said after his charge’s maiden win, “Clearly the horse has got plenty to learn but he's promising and we think he will get over a trip.

"As we're getting closer to the autumn, these three-year-old races usually reveal some promising horses and there's a good plan in place for him so hopefully he can keep stepping up and delivering.”

Gauguin is a son of the superbly bred Anabaa sire Dalghar (a half brother to champions Dalakhani and former Riethuiskraal Stud resident Daylami), whose victories included the Gr3 Prix du Palais Royale.

He is out of the top-class race mare Macavelli Miss (Vettori), whose wins included the 2006 Gr1 Thorndon Mile. Mac De Lago and Gauguin apart, she is also dam of the very smart Hong Kong performer Dr Good Habit (Tale Of The Cat) –a five time winner up to 1600m.

Macavelli Miss is a direct descendant of the great race mare and producer Selene (Chaucer), and this is the same family as South African champion sprinter and prominent first season sire What A Winter.

Gauguin’s Weiho Marwing trained half-brother, Mac De Lago, whose three wins include the 2016 Gr1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge, where he was promoted to first following the disqualification of original winner Trip To Heaven (Trippi). To date, Mac De Lago has earned over R1.6 million in prize money. He will be ridden in Saturday week’s Gr1 Sun Met by Aldo Domeyer.
