Deo Juvente For Colorado King Win

Just seven horses are set to contest the Gr2 Colorado King Stakes at Turffontein on Saturday.

The race is named for one of the greatest horses ever to set foot on the South African turf, with Colorado King (Grand Rapids) going on to land the Gr1 Hollywood Gold Cup in North America following a local campaign which saw the chestnut land all of the Rothman’s July, Cape Guineas and Cape Derby respectively.

Stonehenge (Seventh Rock) who finished first past the post in this race a year ago only to be disqualified and placed second returns for a shot at redemption in the Colorado King Stakes. The perennial front runner, however, needs to improve on his recent form.

Former Equus Champion French Navy (Count Dubois), one of three in the race for Sean Tarry, was a close third in this race last year, when beaten just over 1.5 lengths. The former dual Gr1 winner has not won in over a year and beat just two home last time out in the Gr2 Hawaii Stakes-albeit over a trip short of his best.

Third of the Tarry runners is former Gr1 SA Derby third Samurai Blade (Where’s That Tiger) was a close up third, two runs back, in the Gr3 London News –when one and a quarter lengths behind fellow Colorado King Stakes runner up Deo Juvente (Trippi). The latter is now better off at the weights and should finish in front of Samurai Blade again.

Australian bred four-year-old Brazuca (Teofilo) is one of the best horses around not to have won a feature race –with the Van Vuuren trained colt having been placed in six graded races, and was second in both the Gr1 Grand Parade Cape Guineas and Gr1 Investec Cape Derby as a 3yo.

Kings Archer (A P Arrow) is trying the 2000m trip for a first time but has been extremely consistent of late and did finish under a length off the top class New Predator (New Approach) at level weights two starts back. He is however out at the weights with some of the runners here.

Let It Rain (Dynasty) has a huge task on his hands and looks outclassed at the weights.
