US champion racemare Tepin (Bernstein) has officially been retired from racing. The six-year-old mare’s retirement was announced on Tuesday. She had not officially recorded a workout since February 1st.

Trained by Mark Casse and owned by Robert Masterson, the Machmer Hall bred mare retires a dual US champion, having been named Eclipse Champion Turf Female in both 2015 and 2016. An induction into the US’ Racing Hall Of Fame appears a done deal for Tepin, who won no fewer than 11 graded/group stakes races during her storied career.

Tepin, who won 13 of her 23 outings and banked over $4.4 million in prize money, won the Gr3 Delta Princess Stakes at two but really came into her own as a four-year-old, when her wins included the 2015 Gr1 Breeders’ Cup Mile (over the expense of Mile winners Tourist (Tiznow) and Karakontie).

She made history the following year when becoming the first horse trained outside of Europe to lift the Gr1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot. Her victory was all the more impressive as it was the first time the mare was attempting the straight mile and raced without Lasix.

Tepin, who picked up six Gr1 races during her career, would go on to win the Gr1 Ricoh Woodbine Mile at her next time but suffered defeats in the final two outings of her career which ended with a runner up finish (to Tourist) in the 2016 Gr1 Breeders’ Cup Mile.

Mating plans are yet to be announced for Tepin, who is scheduled to be covered for a first time in 2018. She is one of two graded stakes winners produced by the unraced Stravinsky mare Life Happens, whose son Vyjack (Into Mischief)’s eight wins include the Gr2 Jerome Handicap, Gr2 Kelso Handicap, Gr3 Poker Handicap and Gr3 Gotham Stakes.

She is one of two Breeders’ Cup Mile winners sired by the deceased Storm Cat stallion Bernstein, whose other Breeders’ Cup winner, Karakontie, now stands at Gainesway Farm.

Her trainer cites the fact that Tepin has lost her enthusiasm for racing, saying, “We just think she doesn't want to do it anymore. She's happy and healthy – she just doesn't have the same desire to train and we said all along if she showed that to us we would listen”
