BIG RACE DOUBLE FOR GOFFS

MAGICAL MEMORY (IRE) became the second pattern winner bred by Wardstown Stud this season when taking the Group 3 Hackwood Stakes at Newbury on Saturday. Second at Group 2 level on his seasonal return in May, he was unplaced in the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes, before getting back to winning ways at Haydock earlier in the month. Sent off favourite under Frankie Dettori, the five-year-old was held up in midfield and progressed to chase the leader two furlongs out, improving to lead over a furlong from home and ran on well to score by a length and a quarter. A return to softer ground saw Perfect Angel (IRE) finish a seasonal-best second, with a further length and three quarters back to Lady Macapa in third. The now eight-time winner was bought by Kern Lillingston for €35,000 at the Goffs Orby Sale, having been pinhooked at the venue’s November Foal Sale for €23,000 the previous year.

Like Blond Me (IRE), a Group 2 winner in May, MAGICAL MEMORY (IRE) was bred by Mark and Elaine Clarke at their Wardstown Stud in County Meath. The son of Zebedee is a half-brother to the dam of Listed performer Don’t Bother Me (IRE), out of the Cadeaux Genereux mare Marasem, who Wardstown bought at the Goffs February Sale for €13,000. Marasem is a winning half-sister to Group 2 winner Sayedah (IRE), herself the dam of Beresford Stakes second Battle Of Marathon, while another half-sister produced Princess Margaret Stakes second Sandreamer (IRE).

It was another grey that completed a big race double on the card for Goffs, as BENGALI BOYS (IRE) stormed home in the valuable Weatherbys Super Sprint Stakes for Richard Fahey. A winner on his May debut, the two-year-old colt finished second on his next two starts, perhaps racing a bit too keenly for his own good. Ridden on his latest start by Barry McHugh, he raced in the centre of the track, tracking the leaders until the final furlong, where he quickened impressively and drew away to score by six lengths.

He has more than repaid the €11,000 Fahey and Aidan ‘Mouse’ O’Ryan gave for him at the Goffs Sportsmans Sale, where he was consigned by the Castlebridge Consignment on behalf of breeder N Hartery. He continues an excellent run by the latest crop of Rathasker Stud sire Clodovil (IRE), who commanded a fee of €8,000 this season. BENGALI BOYS (IRE) is one of three winners out of Caherassdotcom, a half-sister to four Stakes horses, including multiple Listed winner and July Stakes third Dubai’s Touch.
