Summer Cup Highlights fantastic Joburg Season

The Sansui Summer Cup is the highlight of the Joburg season, built up to compete with the July and the Met, the Summer Cup has grown in nice strides in recent years. With this year's event proving be competitive and exciting, it should attract the attention of the non racing public, especially in Johannesburg where the local government has backed the event.

There is a Quartet Maxipool on the Gauteng Sansui Summer Cup, with R500,000 added and a likely pool of R2.2 million. The race is a wide-open affair and picking the first four past the post in the right order will not be easy. Here’s Tabnews.co.za's guide to the Summer Cup

Runners

1 – NEW PREDATOR (Aus) Weight 60.0kg Merit Rating 113
Trainer JJ van Vuuren Jockey Brandon Lerena
Last year’s Charity Mile winner. Goes beyond 1600m for the first time since failing in the 2016 Daily News 2000 and there is no guarantee he will get this testing trip. Lots to do at the weights, but should be at the top of his game and not out of it if he stays.
Record: 22 runs; 5 wins; 13 places. Earnings R1,861,500.

2 – ABASHIRI Weight 58.0kg Merit Rating 109
Trainer Mike & Adam Azzie Jockey Karl Zechner
Lost form after winning the 2016 SA Triple Crown, but rested from January to October this year and has done better in two races since his return, including when beaten 1.70 lengths by BRAZUCA (1kg better off) over 1600m. Bad draw but fit now; make a bold bid.
Record: 14 runs; 6 wins; 3 places. Earnings R3,476,000.

3 – MASTER SABINA Weight 58.0kg Merit Rating 109
Trainer Joey Soma Jockey Bernard Fayd’Herbe
Won the last two Summer Cups in the care of Geoff Woodruff. Then changed stables and had four unplaced starts in Durban this winter. Changed stables again after that and will be having his first start for five months. Aims for the first Cup hat trick since Elevation in 1974.
Record: 31 runs; 9 wins; 5 places. Earnings R3,805,725.

4 – FRENCH NAVY Weight 57.5kg Merit Rating 108
Trainer Sean Tarry Jockey S’manga Khumalo
Looked Hollywood bound with two Grade 1 wins in 2015, but has not been back in the No 1 box since January last year. However, his merit rating has dropped substantially and he ran on strongly late when third in the recent 1600m Charity Mile. Better this distance.
Record: 30 runs; 6 wins; 14 places. Earnings R5,056,625.

5 – BRAZUCA (Aus) Weight 57.0kg Merit Rating 107
Trainer JJ van Vuuren Jockey Gavin Lerena
Jockey bookings suggest he could be the stable elect. Won a feature over this course and distance early this year and more recently beat ABASHIRI and another three of these rivals in a 1600m Pinnacle Plate. Fitter with that run under his girth; could finish thereabouts.
Record: 18 runs; 6 wins; 7 places. Earnings R2,065,525.

6 – FORT EMBER Weight 56.0kg Merit Rating 105
Trainer Paul Peter Jockey Gunter Wrogemann
Best form has come against own sex and includes a win in a 2000m feature but has not done badly against males. Good run when led and only stopped late when fifth behind GIRL ON THE RUN (1kg worse off) in the Victory Moon Stakes this month. At a peak now. Chance.
Record: 17 runs; 6 wins; 5 places. Earnings R803,275.

7 – MAC DE LAGO (Aus) Weight 54.5kg Merit Rating 102
Trainer Weiho Marwing Jockey Marco van Rensburg
Made late progress for ninth in the Sun Met in January and only two runs since, the last when tiring badly late in the Charity Mile this month following a rest. Will improve with that run, but needs to find form and stablemate HERMOSO MUNDO is preferred.
Record: 20 runs; 3 wins; 6 places. Earnings R1,704,375.

8 – MASTER SWITCH Weight 54.0kg Merit Rating 101
Trainer Geoff Woodruff Jockey Piere Strydom
From the stable that has won the Summer Cup in the last four years and ran a good trial in the Victory Moon Stakes, when third behind GIRL ON THE RUN (2.5kg worse off) and CORAL FEVER (1kg worse off). Third in this race last year and set to make a bold bid again.
Record: 22 runs; 5 wins; 8 places. Earnings R664,375.

9 – ORCHID ISLAND Weight 53.5kg Merit Rating 101
Trainer Mike de Kock Jockey Anthony Delpech
Trained by Mike de Kock, who has won the Summer Cup a record nine times, and deserves utmost respect. This Fillies Classic winner just needed the run when fourth behind GIRL ON THE RUN (2kg worse off) in the Victory Moon last time. Fitter now; do well.
Record: 9 runs; 3 wins; 5 places. Earnings R945,950.

10 – WIND CHILL Weight 53.5kg Merit Rating 101
Trainer Joey Soma Jockey Callan Murray
Won the SA Oaks over 2450m at this track in May and later not beaten far in the Woolavington 2000. Good trial for the Cup when skipping clear to make virtually all the running in beating Holy Joe by 5.30 lengths over 2000m this month. Inside draw; value proposition.
Record: 14 runs; 4 wins; 5 places. Earnings R921,575.

11 – HERMOSO MUNDO Weight 53.5kg Merit Rating 100
Trainer Weiho Marwing Jockey Weichong Marwing
Won the Gold Bowl, Gold Vase and Gold Cup over marathon trips in succession, but is versatile and has done well over shorter distances in lesser company and the stable is confident of a good run. Badly drawn when unplaced in Charity Mile and fitter now. Be right there.
Record: 21 runs; 5 wins; 9 places. Earnings R1,586,700.

12 – CROWD PLEASER Weight 53.0kg Merit Rating 100
Trainer JJ van Vuuren Jockey Keagan de Melo
Barring a bad run in the SA Classic, has consistently been in the money this year, including a win in the Campanajo 2200 on Durban July Day. Narrowly beaten by stablemate GIRL ON THE RUN (4kg worse off) in a Pinnacle Plate last time. Must consider.
Record: 15 runs; 4 wins; 6 places. Earnings R638,250.

13 – BANNER HILL Weight 53.0kg Merit Rating 99
Trainer Geoff Woodruff Jockey Grant van Niekerk
Talented individual formerly trained in the Western Cape. Promising debut for this stable when third behind BRAZUCA (1kg worse off) and ABASHIRI (2kg worse off) over 1600m and will be better suited to this distance. Will also have come on with that run; could shape.
Record: 19 runs; 6 wins; 7 places. Earnings R509,450.

14 – LIEGE Weight 53.0kg Merit Rating 99
Trainer Sean Tarry Jockey Raymond Danielson
Fourth behind MASTER SABINA (2kg better off) in this race last year and only three runs since. Fair comeback from a rest when fifth behind BRAZUCA (2.5kg worse off) in October and might have been flat when 10th in Victory Moon Stakes subsequently. Set to do well.
Record: 21 runs; 5 wins; 4 places. Earnings R685,000.

15 – PAGODA Weight 52.5kg Merit Rating 99
Trainer Geoff Woodruff Jockey JP van der Merwe
Second to Al Sahem in SA Derby this year before a sixth in the Daily News 2000 and a downfield finish in the Durban July. Then rested and ran on late for third behind GIRL ON THE RUN (3.5kg worse off) and CROWD PLEASER (0.5kg worse off) over 1950m. Light weight; can feature
Record: 12 runs; 3 wins; 5 places. Earnings R749,225.

16 – GIRL ON THE RUN Weight 52.5kg Merit Rating 98
Trainer JJ van Vuuren Jockey Donovan Mansour
Game and talented mare who has beaten the males in her last two starts, most recently when fighting on bravely to pip CORAL FEVER (1.5kg better off) in the 1800m Victory Moon Stakes here this month. Fully fit in her third run after layoff; no surprise if she wins again.
Record: 15 runs; 6 wins; 8 places. Earnings R779,375.

17 – CORAL FEVER Weight 52.0kg Merit Rating 97
Trainer Robbie Sage Jockey Muzi Yeni
Excellent handicapper who won the 1800m Jubilee in June and has had a promising preparation for his biggest test to date, improving nicely from his comeback race when beaten a short head in the Victory Moon. Light weight and room to improve. Big chance.
Record: 14 runs; 4 wins; 4 places. Earnings R488,025.

18 – TILBURY FORT Weight 52.0kg Merit Rating 97
Trainer Sean Tarry Jockey Craig Zackey
Carries 0.5kg more than should be the case. Was cramped late when a 3.25-length eighth behind Hat Puntano in the Charity Mile last time in his comeback from a four-month rest. Better efforts include a second in the Betting World 1900 at Greyville in May. Can shape.
Record: 13 runs; 2 wins; 7 places. Earnings R390,900.

19 – SOCIAL ORDER Weight 52.0kg Merit Rating 96
Trainer Sean Tarry Jockey Lyle Hewitson
Lightly raced and put up a terrific effort in his first run in this class when charging late to finish second to Hat Puntano in the 1600m Charity Mile recently. First start beyond 1600m and has good prospects of staying. Can improve, light weight, big chance.
Record: 6 runs; 2 wins; 3 places. Earnings R342,825.

20 – LET IT RAIN Weight 52.0kg Merit Rating 95
Trainer Weiho Marwing Jockey Ryan Munger
Is 1kg out at the weights and might prefer further. Did run a game race in the 2400m Java Handicap last time, beating Kinaan by 0.80 lengths, and will strip 100% fit now. Has a light weight but many others make more appeal in an ultra-competitive race.
Record: 25 runs; 5 wins; 10 places. Earnings R655,388.
