Hewitson Equals Apprentice Record

Lyle Hewitson equalled the excellent record set by an apprentice for the most wins. Currently it is owned by Gavin Lerena and now Lyle Hewitson.

The record equalling number of 284 was achieved after Hewitson rode Roy Had Enough to victory for long time owner and investor in racing, Roy Moodley. The record was held by Michael Roberts (260) for almost 40 years and then broken by Lerena in 2007. That is some achievement.

SAHorseracing.COM interviewed Hewitson after this achievement. He was thrilled with the record. "It's very special and of course a highlight of my career and life in general! My family is so proud and have been amazing support throughout," he stated.

With respect to the work involved in reaching this milestone, he puts that into perspective, "it took heaps of hard work, time and dedication- but could not have occurred with the support I received and for which I’m truly grateful."

When asked about how he got there and his take on the dedication factor, "First on the training tracks, last to leave mindset. Hard yards don’t go unnoticed. Going out of your way to get opportunities and to make owners and trainers happy. Being optimistic, happy and willing is vital in creating chances. Honesty and good feedback is important." It could prove to be secret for an young apprentice to take onboard.

We also quizzed him on his plans for the future, both current and long term, "Plans include maintaining a top 3 position on the national log and simultaneously winning champion apprentice. Hopefully a Group 1 along the way and a Hong Kong opportunity would be amazing and something I will be working towards too."

We asked him for any last words about his achievement," Just would like to say thanks to everyone who has messaged or shown support in anyway. Also to the owners, trainers, academy, Avontuur, & my family and friends for all they have done for me."

SAHorseracing.COM would like salute an outstanding ambassador for the sport and wish him every success.
