Big news breaking on Tuesday is that KUDA Insurance are to bring six time SA Champion jockey Jeff Lloyd back to ride in the Vodacom Durban July.
Famously a race the legendary ‘Guvnor’ has never won in 25 attempts, this initiative may enable Lloyd to fill the one gaping hole in his CV in terms of South African racing.
The situation is reminiscent of the equally legendary Muis Roberts, who despite being SA champion jockey eleven times and conquering the UK had never been victorious in KZN’s premier race. He famously returned in 1997 to score on Super Quality in the twilight of his career.
The mere fact that Lloyd is still riding at all is remarkable, as after suffering a stroke in 2013 he would have been excused for hanging up his saddle once and for all.
It remains to be seen what Jeff Lloyd rides come the first Saturday in July, but whatever it is the great man will be giving it his all.
