At The Races presenter Hayley Moore was the heroine of the hour at Chepstow as she dramatically stepped in to catch the appropriately named Give Em A Clump who was running loose on the course.

Moore, daughter of trainer Gary Moore and sister of riders Ryan, Jamie and Josh, decided enough was enough after nobody could catch the wayward horse, who had unseated Fran Berry after a furlong of the 7f handicap won by Kachumba.

Give Em a Clump was travelling at pace as he headed past the stands but that did not deter Moore, who leapt under the rail and grabbed the reins. Despite being knocked to the ground she managed to keep hold of the David Evans-trained three-year-old before rising to her feel unscathed.

“I just couldn’t bear to see him go out on another lap so thought we’d go for it,” said Moore, as she continued her presenting duties on At The Races.

Chepstow clerk of the course Keith Ottesen said: “Hayley was extremely brave out there as the horse was not for stopping but her experience with horses has obviously helped. I think she probably deserves some sort of bravery medal as she has stepped in where others may have not.”

Explaining Give Em A Clump’s antics, he added: “It seems as soon as the horse left the stalls the blinkers slipped up his face and over his eyes – he has panicked and lost it a bit before ending up on the floor and unseating Fran Berry.

“The horse is none the worse for the episode but Fran has been stood down for the remainder of the card as he is, not surprisingly, a bit shaken and bruised and will have to pass the doctor before he can ride again.”
