Surcharge Sold, out of Champions Cup

Recent impressive Daily News winner Surcharge has been sold to a Chinese owned consortium, and as a consequence is scratched from Saturday’s Champions Cup at Greyville.

Top bloodstock agent John Freeman brokered the deal but would only reveal the buyer is a Chinese company based in Australia, and who own two stud farms there.

A Singapore based agent was also involved as an intermediary in putting together the complicated, multinational agreement.

The 112 rated Surcharge will enter quarantine in Cape Town on Monday. His next destination will be Mauritius as he begins the convoluted process involved in getting our horses overseas.

His final stopping point is unclear at this point, as the purchasers have racing interests in all of Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, and China itself.

“It’s sad that the best performed Gimmethegreenlight colt so far is going to be lost to South Africa, but he is sure to be a great advertisement for our racing and breeding” said bloodstock guru Freeman in conclusion.

Surcharge is likely to be joined in the quarantine station soon by another top Gimmethegreenlight colt in Barahin. The Sheikh Makhtoum owned juvenile seems certain to be furthering his career in Dubai come next year.
