BREEZE-UPS SUCCESSFUL!
The breeze-ups put up by Ambleway graduates recently were very successful. All the horses worked steadily showing off their action. We were delighted that two of the experienced "panel" selected our grey filly, Lot 138 COLIN'S GIFT (pictured) as one of the three best fillies to work. She put up a really good gallop, showing plenty of power and scope.
Generally the entire Highlands batch impressed with the manner in which they moved and particularly Lot 141 TYLER'S TALENT and Lot 105 CHEERY BERRY BIM impressed onlookers as being particularly good movers. Apart from the abovementioned horses there is plenty to like about the remaining Lots - 3, 12, 19, 112 and 151.
The group from Anfield Stud also worked along steadily. They may not have worked as fast as some of the other horses but were able to show their action and that they were well-balanced. These included Lot 1, 153 and 162, the latter two being Brazilian bred. At present there is seldom a race meeting that goes by without a Brazilian horse winning a race - so do look out for these!
These horses are now being prepared for the sale at Germiston on Sunday, November 8. Please contact me if you would like to see any of the horses here before they leave; they will be at the sale yard on Friday, November 6, from lunch time for further viewing - see you there!
The feature racing season is still warming up and we are delighted to have graduates successful in feature races around the country:
TROPICAL EMPIRE won the Pinnacle Stakes over 1600m coming with a late strong run and THANDOLWANI ran on for fourth in the same race at Greyville. GOLDEN PARACHUTE started favourite for the Settlers' Trophy in Cape Town, a listed race over 2400m and ran on well at the end to finish third. BULSARA ran on late to finish fourth in the Falcon Sprint, a listed race over 1200m at Turffontein - a distance short of his best. ALIMONY ran an honest third in the Emerald Cup Stakes, a Gr2 which he won last year in Kimberley.
Congratulations to connections of all the abovementioned horses. Do follow them as they are all being prepared for other features and will continue to improve.
I am delighted to see that the Michael Roberts stable is really back in action. He has recently been successful with three of our Ambleway graduates: WEST COAST GOLD, a handsome son of Rich Man's Gold placed and then picked up a good win for Fieldspring Racing over 1400m. Michael was also successful for Mrs Newsome with the magnificent colt TIRADE. This strong son of Western Winter had come back from a long lay-off and under Felix Coetzee showed plenty of speed and was full of running at the end of the 1000m - well done!
Sydney Cassell has also been a staunch supporter of the stable and was rewarded with a great win by ZIZOU. This big son of Western Winter, who is a half-brother to James Jaguar, ran on well over 1400m to win going away. Sydney has had many horses placed over the last month including BOLD PRINCESS, RUBY ROCKS, JUST JETTING ALONG and INDECENT OBSESSION who I hope will win soon for him.
Geoff Woodruff trains two highly rated graduates that showed plenty of promise as three-year olds. SEATTLE ICE and JET TYCOON looked like stars in their first races and then seemed to disappoint a little but both of these horses have matured and are now starting to show some of the mettle they produced in their earlier races. JET TYCOON disappointed in Durban after winning two good races in the Vaal. He returned to Johannesburg and won a cracking race first time back on the track over 1400m. He raced handy and finished full of running for Henry and Pat Devine, his owners and breeders. This big son of Jetmaster has shown very consistent form having raced six times for three wins and three places.
SEATTLE ICE had raided Durban and shown a liking for the Greyville track. He had already been placed in the Guineas there and again was full of running at this track to win well over 1600m and having led from start to finish. Congratulations to his owner/breeder Larry Nestadt who races this horse with popular owner, Greg Blank. This colt then competed in a very strong race and was only just beaten by Oracy (a top horse who is unbeaten) over 1400m. He really is worth following as now he is racing so well!
Wendy Whitehead seems to have hit the highlights with her three-year old son of Strike Smartly, TWO TONE. This colt is one of the group of horses we schooled last year for Mrs Oppenheimer when she decided to give some of the trainers in KwaZulu-Natal an opportunity to train her horses. This has proved particularly exciting for Wendy who looks like she is really a star in the making. After winning his maiden very easily there was plenty asked of him in his second start where he competed in night racing and around the bend and, although he was a little green on the bend, he ran on very strongly at the end of 1000m to win easily. Of interest, the second and third horses were both graduates from Ambleway - INDECENT OBSESSION finished second and KANAVARO a close-up third.
We have spelled several horses for Anfield Stud over the past few months, apart from the Ready to Run Sale horses, we have had two winners for them including WOMEN'S RIGHTS and SILENT MIST. WOMEN'S RIGHTS is a very well-bred daughter of Al Mufti who races for Paul Matchett and she has been very consistent running lots of places. In this last race she was very handy and battled out the finish with another of Ambleway graduates - CRUELLA. She got up in the end to win a very good race. SILENT MIST is trained by Glen Kotzen and after having had a break she ran a few good races and then came back to win very nicely over 1400m for the team. Well done to Greg, Marlon, Darrell Yutar and his dad.
We have had many winners in Gauteng including MAJOR STORM who won again for Brett Warren, notching up his fifth win for well-known race-goer André MacDonald. This son of Parade Leader is certainly enjoying races over a distance. WHITE WATER RAFTING, who relocated to Gauteng, has now won two of his last three starts over 1000m for his new connections. He is a son of Malhub and is a very neat and balanced horse and he really enjoys the sprint distance of 1000m. BELOTTO FLASH, a very useful sprinter, has shown a lot of form for Louis Goosen over 1200m where she won again. SERAPH is a big son of Announce who has been very consistent for St John Gray, winning again on the sand over 1450m - well done to you!
In Kimberley we have had lots of success recently for Basil and Betty Linington. The last two to win for them have been trained by Tobie Spies who have both won very well. A big daughter of Al Mufti, SOME LIKE IT HOT won over 1400m and FORTUNATO, a handsome son of National Assembly won again over 1000m - congratulations to you all. BIG BLACK, a big son of Danehill Dancer, was tried in Gauteng under Geoff Woodruff and ran a few good places. He had been a little disappointing and now has gone to race in Kimberley for his connections. There he won very easily over 1400m by five lengths. Well done to Des Scott and Robert Muir.
WINTERINTHEWOODS had a break here and returned to race under Glen Kotzen and notched up a few places showing plenty of speed in her starts. She was then moved down to Port Elizabeth where she won her debut for Australian owner, Sean Buckley, over 1000m. Trainer Gavin Smith let her take the lead early and from the front she rolled on to win very easily. We have now just sent her half-sister by Al Mufti to Glen Kotzen. She is a very racy muscular type of filly and I hope she has the same speed.
Another filly to have been successful in Port Elizabeth was HARBOUR LIGHTS. This filly won well over 2400m for her owners Robert Muir and Des Scott. Well done to you as Robert Muir also bred her!
In KwaZulu-Natal we have had a few winners including BOLD WONDER for conditioner Duncan Howells. This filly certainly shows she enjoys a trip and won again over 2000m for her owners the Messrs Pennells and Futter. Congratulations to you all!
SARONG is a very neat but well-related filly bred at Rathmor Stud. She races for Mike McCardy and a syndicate of owners and won very well over 1600m for them. Dennis Drier had this filly knocking on the door for some time having been placed in the last few starts so it was great to see her win.
Dennis was successful again with the son of Doowaly, NORSE SKY over 1600m. This was the horse's second win in his last three starts. He has overcome his problems now and looks set to continue his good form for his team of owners, the Messrs de Marigny, de Charmoy, Nidd, Sturlese and Gill Drier.
There are a lot of horses that have been placed that should be watched: STAR EMPIRE, LADY DELENE, JUST JETTING ALONG, ON POINT, WHITE WATER RAFTING, PATTAYA BEACH, BOLD PRINCESS, CRUELLA, DIOR ADDICT, IDLER, TURF QUEEN, RUBY ROCKS, COUNT IVANSKI, KANAVARO, IRISH NATIONAL, DECHARNE, FOLLOW YOUR DREAM, COOBER PEDDY, TAKE OVER TARGET, MISS DU BOIS, SERAPH, THE GIANT, IPSI DIXIT, SYCO'S STAR, TEST STRIPE, BET ON BLUE, AIR POCKET, INDECENT OBSESSION, RAHKEE, BARANOVA, FANTASTIC LADY, FRANKIE MERCURY and PUZAMOYA
All of us have been through a very difficult economic year and for this reason we have absorbed cost increases where we can, but have now had to review our price structures and do wish to give notice that, with effect from 1 December 2009, our fees for pre-training and spelling will be R2 950,00 per month. Thank you again for your continued support.
Enjoy your racing!
