Chris van Niekerk Buys Top Priced Colt at Cape Yearling Sale

BloodStock SA’s first yearling sale of 2010 was held at Sandringham Farm in Muldersvlei, Cape Town on Sunday 7th February. There was keen interest in the 254 lots catalogued and a number of trainers flew in from Gauteng, KZN, Kimberley and Port Elizabeth to attend the sale along with the local trainers. The recent success of graduates from the Cape Yearling Sale, including the legendary Pocket Power, whose owner, Marsh Shirtliff visited the sales grounds, along with the opportunity to find a value buy with champion potential was a definite draw card. Sandringham Farm, proved to be popular with vendors and buyers alike creating a farm-like atmosphere.

The Sale Topper, Lot 91, Whiteline Fever, was consigned by Mike Barnard’s Daytona Stud. This son of Wilgerbosdrift stallion, Right Approach, out of Hockey Corner was knocked down to Chris van Niekerk seated with Sean Tarry for R700,000. Lot 252, the unnamed colt by Highland’s stallion, Dynasty, out of Winter Kill consigned by Zandvliet Stud was sold to Mike Bass

Racing for R500,000, the second highest price attained.

Other active buyers not yet mentioned include John Freeman, Hassen Adams, Paul Peter from Johannesburg, J Beukman, Dippen Blue Racing and Mont Venteux (Pty) Ltd, seated with Brett Crawford.

BSA would like to thank all trainers, buyers and vendors who supported this sale and take this opportunity to wish all the 2010 graduates every success. We look forward to watching their progress.
