KZN Yearling Sale offers traditional value and even greater variety

GRADE 2 winners Goat (cost R60,000), Spring Clover (R45,000) and Grade 3 winners Ultra Vires (R70 000) and Cool Zone (R150,000) are among the value buys from recent KZN Yearling Sales.

The 2010 renewal of the Sale will be held at the TBA Complex, Gosforth Park, on Friday, 4 June, a change of venue from the Sibaya Entertainment Kingdom to accommodate logistical arrangements around the Soccer World Cup.

While good value is normally associated with the KZN Yearling Sale, an even greater variety of young horses makes this year’s event more interesting than ever. The progeny of no less than 78 stallions will come under the auctioneer’s hammer, from boom stallions Captain Al, Silvano and VAR, to established favourites Jallad, Kahal and Windrush to young pretenders Dynasty, Grey’s Inn Black Minnaloushe, all highly popular at the recent National Sale. The most familiar names among the freshman stallions are former classic winners Jam Alley (Peintre Celebre) and ToBe Or Nottobe (Caesour), while Hinton Wells (IRE) and South Atlantic are new kids on the block representing sire-of-sires Sadler’s Wells. Newton (IRE) and Overlord (AUS) are by Danehill, another prolific sire of sires.

There are 265 lots in the catalogue with an additional yearling, Lot 266 on a separate catalogue page. Lots 263 to 265 are two-year olds. Astute pedigree students will find among the catalogue pages prominent stud book families and close relations of recent top racetrack performers.

They include, but are not limited to:

-Lot 137, Casa Nostra, by Strike Smartly, is a half-sister to 2010 “Queen Of The Sand”, Cinnamon Sugar.

-Lot 84, an unnamed filly by Spectrum, is a half-sister to much improved Power Lord, Grade 3 placed just recently.

-Lot 128 is a Grey’s Inn filly from Jungle Idol. She’s a half-sister to the brilliant, exported Hard Astern, unnamed as yet.

-Lot 143, Genteel Approach is a half-sister to Durban July hopeful Fabiani, by Right Approach.

There are any number of lots likely to fall in the “bargain” department, among which Lot 94, a half-brother to Bennie And The Jets by Second Empire; Lot 160, a Way West colt from a half-sister to Summer Cup-placed Captain Scott; Lot 186, a colt by King Of Kings from the immediate family of Zeeno, Gluwein and Meltaway and Lot 209, a Lecture colt from a young half-sister to speed merchants Rock Opera and Hit Song. BloodStock SA, via a breeder-funded bonus scheme, invites all buyers to participate in their 2011 National Added Bonus Programme. Bonuses will be paid to qualifying graduates from this sale that manage to win any of a series of juvenile features in 2011.
