Tiger Ridge, a South African stallion and sibling to A.P. Indy and Summer Squall, died from a heart attack on Jan. 16, reports Wilgerbosdrift Stud Farm. He was 18.

The son of Storm Cat began stallion duty in 2001 at Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds in Ocala, Fla., following an on-track career where he went winless in five starts. He was sold in 2006 to Mary Slack’s Wilgerbosdrift Stud Farm in South Africa, where he stood for the remainder of his career.

Tiger Ridge’s leading U.S. runners include multiple Grade 2 winner Leah’s Secret, Grade 3 winner Roman Tiger, multiple stakes winner Ju Jitsu Jax, Grade 2-placed stakes winner Storm in May, stakes winner Strike the Tiger, who also won a stakes at Royal Ascot, and Grade 3-placed multiple stakes winner Little Nick, who is a half-brother to turf star Little Mike.

Tiger Ridge sired South African champion Cherry On the Top, Group 1 winner Wagner and Group 2 winner Kavanagh. He is also the sire of Puerto Rican champion Gallant Ruler and Mexican champion Savona. His progeny have earned over $26 million through Jan. 16.
Tiger Ridge was out of the Grade 3-winning Secretariat mare Weekend Surprise, the Broodmare of the Year in 1992. In addition to Horse of the Year and elite sire A.P. Indy and Preakness Stakes winner and sire Summer Squall, Weekend Surprise produced Grade 3-placed stakes winner Eavesdropper and Multiple Grade 3-placed Honor Grades, both sires.

Tiger Ridge was also a half-brother to Grade 3 winner Welcome Surprise, dam of sale-topper Mr. Sekiguchi and several other stakes producers, including Weekend Storm, dam of Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Court Vision.
