Kahal Dead

The Shadwell owned stallion, Kahal, has been euthanized. The son of Machiavellian he initially stood in South Africa at Summerhill Stud during a highly successful stint before being moved to Bush Hill Stud a few years back. He was euthanized yesterday morning after suffering abdominal tumours and the complications that occurred thereafter.

He was the leading sire from the province of Kwazulu Natal and was a fixture in South Africa's top 5 stallions for the past 5 years.

Kahal won races seven races including the Challenge S (Group 2), and the Nearctic Hcp (Grade 2) and was second in the Jersey Stakes (Group 3) and fourth in the Prix Maurice De Gheest (Group 1).

To date, Kahal has sired over 60 stakes horses and 19 Gr1 performers. This tally includes the Grade One winners Love Struck (SA Classic), Desert Links (Gold Cup), Noble Heir (Computaform Sprint), Equus Champion Bold Ellinore, Spiced Gold (SA Fillies Classic) and Chocolicious (Allan Robertson Fillies Championship). The latter, in foal to Frankel, was sold for 400 000 euros at last year’s Goffs November Breeding Stock Sale.

Other top-class performers sired by Kahal included the classic winning fillies Fisani and Festival Of Fire, millionaires Tales of Bravery, The Mouseketeer and Uncle Tommy, and Vodacom Durban July (Grade 1) runner up, Smanjemanje.
Never an official champion sire, Kahal (Machiavellian out of Just A Mirage by Green Desert) finished in the top ten on the South African general sires log in the last five years. He was also a tremendously versatile stallion, whose offspring won Grade One races from 1000-3200 metres.
