World Rankings: Just A Way in front of Variety Club

The official listing of the world's best racehorses
(For 3yos and upwards which raced between 1st January and 6th July 2014)

JUST A WAY (JPN) [130] is still well clear at the top of the LONGINES World's Best Racehorse Rankings for 2014 for the fourth consecutive month for his victory back in March in the Dubai Duty Free Stakes (G1) at Meydan. However there have been some very good performances around the world over the last month and in particular, two improving three year olds have indicated that they may well be challenging him over the rest of the year.

First of all, KINGMAN (GB) [126] improved his position from joint third to joint second in the Rankings with a fluent display in the St. James's Palace Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot. He is now the winner of five of his six races with his only defeat coming in the Qipco 2000 Guineas (G1) at Newmarket, where he was beaten half a length by NIGHT OF THUNDER (IRE) [120]. This time Night Of Thunder was a worthy second with Kingman a comfortable two and a quarter lengths victor despite hanging across the track.

Entering the top eight for the first time is SEA THE MOON (GER) [124] who was a spectacular winner of the IDEE Deutsches Derby (G1) at Hamburg last Sunday. The unbeaten son of Sea The Stars (Ire) sprinted eleven lengths clear of Lucky Lion (GB) who had previously won the Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen (G2), the German Two Thousand Guineas.

Kingman and Sea The Moon are now the two highest rated three year olds in the world on turf and all eyes will be on them over the next few months to see if they can improve their ratings further when they get their first opportunity to take on the older horses in all aged Pattern Races.

For the third consecutive year GOLD SHIP (JPN) [124] has put up a performance figure of 124. At Hanshin at the end of June he was a fluent winner of the Takarazuka Kinen (G1) by 3 lengths. In the process Gold Ship was winning this prestigious Japanese race for the second year running.

THE FUGUE (GB) [124] is another newcomer into the top eight this month after her effortless victory in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot. She showed she is a very capable filly with an excellent turn of foot in beating MAGICIAN (IRE) [123] and she was comfortably in control in the final furlong. As a result The Fugue is currently the highest rated filly in the world for performances in 2014.
