GR 1 THEKWINI STAKES: SAME JURISDICTION EDGES DUEL WITH ALICE

Same Jurisdiction (SAF) has shown improvement with each start and she duly completed a hat-trick after edging out Carry On Alice in a tight finish to the Gr 1 Thekwini Stakes over 1600m at Greyville on Saturday. Bilateral (SAF) ran on for third ahead of Banbury (SAF).

Banbury was soon in front, setting a pedestrian early pace ahead of Run For Revelry with Carry On Alice racing a lot more handily on this occasion, disputing third with Same Jurisdiction. Littleblacknumber was next best, racing ahead of Bilateral and favourite Alboran Sea, the latter pulling hard due to the lack of pace.

Carry On Alice was sent about her business soon after entering the straight and she soon had the rest of the field under pressure. The exception was Same Jurisdiction, who came forward with a resolute run. This pair pulled clear of the rest to fight it out and although Carry On Alice always looked to have the edge, her rival made a final decisive lunge on the line to grab the verdict.

Same Jurisdiction hasn't looked back since finishing third on debut and there looks to be much more to come as she was not ideally suited by the slow pace here. She continued a good run of big-race form for the combination of jockey Kevin Shea and trainer Duncan Howells, who had teamed up successfullywith the likes of Via Africa and One Cool Dude during the course of the season.

Carry On Alice showed that her failure in the Golden Slipper earlier in the month was an aberration and looked much more like her old self here. This was a top effort considering she had to tack across from a wide draw and with a Gr 1 victory and two close Gr 1 seconds to her name, she ends the season as the most accomplished filly in the juvenile ranks as far as performances at the highest level are concerned.

Bilateral had caused a 50/1 shock when winning the Golden Slipper but she showed that that was no fluke with a respectable effort here, while Banbury also emerged with credit after having made the early running.
