Jockey on Forfeit list for not paying costs

Pat Cosgrave has been placed on the forfeit list of the Emirates Racing Authority over his failure to pay costs relating to a ban.

The rider was initially suspended for six months, which was later reduced to four months on appeal, after he was found guilty of improper riding in the Group One Jebel Hatta at Meydan earlier this year.

However, he was successful in a subsequent appeal to the British Horseracing Authority not to reciprocate the suspension, with the Professional Jockeys Association hitting out at the ERA's decision to try to recover £35,000 in costs from Cosgrave.

The PJA wrote to the ERA requesting the withdrawal of the claim but the matter has not been resolved, prompting Cosgrave to be added to the forfeit list, which usually results in the person being disqualified from racing.

Cosgrave has applied to have the rule disregarded, with a BHA hearing set for September 22.

A BHA statement said: "The BHA has been notified by representatives of Pat Cosgrave that the jockey has been placed on the forfeit list of the Emirates Racing Authority.

"Under BHA's rules of racing such a development would result in the individual being treated as a disqualified person in this country.

"However, Cosgrave has exercised his right to make an application that the rule should not be applied in this case, and he has been granted a stay with regard to the enforcement of the rule until the end of Monday, 22 September.

"By this time he will need to have provided BHA with the grounds on which his application would be heard."
