FIRST GROUP WIN FOR SPEEDY ANGEL

MECCA’S ANGEL (IRE) provided a second Group 3 win for Irish-bred horses at Newbury on Saturday when winning the Dubai International Airport World Trophy. After taking the lead two furlongs out, she was challenged by Middle Park Stakes third Justice Day (IRE), but battled gamely to go on and win by two and a half lengths. The 3yo filly was placed in three Listed events last year, including a second to Hot Streak (IRE), but recorded her first Listed win earlier this month when winning the Scarborough Stakes in impressive fashion. Trainer Michael Dods and owner David Metcalfe are in no rush with her and are looking to next year for their main aims- the Nunthorpe and Abbaye being on their agenda. Bred by Yeomanstown Stud and Doc Bloodstock, she is the first foal out of Folga, a winning half-sister to a Listed winner, and her win gave sire Dark Angel (IRE) his fourth Group 3 winner. Her full brother, Markaz (IRE), trained by Barry Hills, holds entries in the Middle Park Stakes and Irish 2,000 Guineas.
