DISCO AL DOUBLES UP IN ALGOA CUP

Disco Al (SAF) returned to the scene of his greatest triumph to record a double in the Gr 3 Betting World Algoa Cup over 2000m at Fairview on Sunday. Forest Digger (SAF) edged out stablemate Silent Partner (SAF) for second as Bonnard (SAF) ran on for fourth.

Veteran front-runner Blaze Of Fire took up his customary role ahead of Gone Baby Gone, Masai Warrior, Arion and Lord Badger as Disco Al sat on the fence, about seven lengths off the leader. Silent Partner also sat in midfield with Forest Digger and Bonnard racing towards the rear, only three horses behind them.

Blaze Of Fire was soon under pressure in the straight and the race became a cavalry charge halfway down the straight, with a number of runners with chances. Silent Partner emerged out of the chaos to lead 300m out, but Forest Digger was on his case and battled on past to take his measure. Bonnard looked a threat up the outside but the stage was merely being set for the well-backed Disco Al who kicked into contention inside the final furlong and finished too well for the rest, going on to win by just over a length.

Disco Al clearly enjoys it out here and the 5-year-old was given a peach of a ride by jockey Anton Marcus (pictured). Marcus and trainer Joey Ramsden were teaming up for their second graded feature victory of the weekend, having landed the Gr 3 Cape Classic with Act Of War at Kenilworth barely 24 hours earlier.
