Anton Marcus injured, operation successful

South African racing's "superman" Anton Marcus had an unfortunate break whilst riding at Greyville yesterday when his thumb was badly injured after a horse had stumbled.

Marcus went into theatre this morning to fix his damaged tendon. KZN owner and Marcus's good friend, Alesh Naidoo, spoke to SAHorseracing.Com about the injury.

"He was riding my horse Admiral's Eye in the last at Greyville. At about the 1000m mark she stumbled causing injury to his left thumb. Previously he injured his right thumb. On watching the race I could see Anton shaking his thumb.  I was watching the race with Charles Laird and I quickly said something happened to Anton's hand. Because everyone could see him shaking his one hand. I guess he was in alot of pain immediately. He still rode my filly till the last 400m mark and then I could see he was in trouble so he didn't preserve with the mount. He did go into surgery this afternoon. He's such a gentleman and a dear friend."

Naidoo confirmed that he had spoken to Marcus post operation and he is out of theatre but in pain. The injury will cause Marcus to miss the rest of this year and he would do well to return to full fitness at the beginning of the new year.
