Greyville fiasco causes major havoc

Chaos reigned in Durban as Greyville was plunged into darkness and it wasn't a loading shedding issue that caused the major fault at Greyville.

Left without a press statement from the authorities at Gold Circle, it meant that the media speculation was rife. The first two races were cancelled and rest of the meeting was delayed.

To add to the woes Apprentice Divan Neethling was injured in the stalls during the first race, breaking his arms in a fall as a horse reared and a false start was also declared.

Neethling was taken to hospital by ambulance. This all occurred after 7pm when the lights returned to Greyville 50 mins after the scheduled start. The race was first delayed then abandoned as there was no ambulance available after the first one was needed for young Neethling. The second race was also abandoned.

An announcement that Ethekwini Municipality were apparently testing the lights and the current at Greyville to get the lights back on was disseminated to the viewing public at the time of the blackout.

The first leg of the Bipot and Place Accumalator were abandoned.

With major repercussions for betting around the country and in jurisdictions taking the night meeting; the owners, trainers and punters deserved to have been informed by Gold Circle about the fiasco. By Saturday morning no statement was issued.
