COLTRANE ROARS HOME IN SUMMER STAYERS

Coltrane (ARG) bounced back to his best with a comfortable victory The Gr 3 Grandwest Cape Summer Stayers Handicap, run over  2500m at Kenilworth on Saturday. Gothic (SAF) once again had to settle for second ahead of Current EVent (SAF) and Dynastic Power (SAF).

Dynasty's Pride was soon in front ahead of Current Event, Wavin' Flag, Gothic and Putney Flyer. Tribal Dance was next best ahead of Dynastic Power, River Crossing and Coltrane.

Dynasty's Pride opened up in the middle stages and had extended her lead to about a dozen lengths at the halfway stage, by which time Tribal Dance had moved up to challenge Current Event for second. The rest of the field kept largely the same order, with Coltrane continuing to look on from the rear.

It was still Dynasty's Pride in front as the field turned for home, the lead still a substantial one, and it was only entering the last furlong that she finally threw in the towel. Current Event and Gothic had been making inroads all the way down the straight and they looked set to fight it out but Coltrane was travelling with a ton in hand to their outside and he coasted on by to win going away by just under a length, causing a 25/1 upset in the process.

Coltrane, who was giving trainer Joey Ramsden the first leg of a feature double on the day, was entitled to respect if he could reproduce the form that saw him finish second in last season's J & B Jet Stayers at this track, but he had been below his best in his last three starts and was overlooked by many on this occasion. He was given a typically well-judged ride by Anthony Delpech (pictured) and was notching up his fourth career victory.

Gothic has finally put together a consistent run of form and is due a win after yet again being run out of it close to home.

Current Event was up in class and stayed on well enough after tracking the pacemaker for most of the race, while Dynastic Power ran on late without quite threatening.
