Cape Flying Championship (WFA) : Fly By Night to win competitive but classy field

Cape Flying Championship (WFA) : Fly By Night to win competitive but classy field

The five-year-old mare, FLY BY NIGHT, looks set to repeat her success in the Mercury Sprint at the now closed Clairwood track. She has an excellent turn of foot and will be doing her best work late. She may have reeled off four straight wins last time but was hampered and baulked in the latter stages. Her run in the SA Fillies Sprint at Scottsville last May when she finished a head behind the sprinting star, VIA AFRICA, was especially good and that should give one a better picture of her ability. Trained by Cape Town top trainer, Mike Bass and ridden by Bernard Fayd'Herbe, she will have every right to be considered the eventual winner. Her form over this course and distance has been excellent with two wins and two seconds from her four starts over this course and distance.

The lightly raced, CAPTAIN OF ALL, should challenge all the way. He won the Grade 1 Gold Medallion at Scottsville in May and followed it up with a close third in the Grade 1 Golden Horse at Greyville on July Day. His record in Cape Town this season has been two wins from three starts which culminated with a good win last time in the Grade 2 Diadem Stakes over 1200m. He has only run once over today's distance and that was on debut when he finished a short head back in second. He is fast and could hold on over the distance. Dennis Drier has an excellent record in the Cape during the season. Sean Cormack has ridden him in all of his starts.

ALBORAN SEA takes on stronger but did finish half-a-length behind FLY BY NIGHT last time but is ½ kg worse off. She is an improving three-year-old from the Mike De Kock yard and should be involved in the finish. Weichong Marwing rides.

If voyager mile were applicable to horse travel then COPPER PARADE would be top of that list. He has contested the top sprints around the country and more often that not has been rather neglected in the betting and has had a habit in the past of putting up solid performances. Will be running on and Piere Strydom rides this seven-year-old again. A good horse to include in the quartets.

The horse with the best racing record in the field is TRIP TEASE who has run thirteen times for nine wins, two seconds and two third. This Gauteng trained horse is highly talented and conditioner Louis Goosen would not have brought him all the way to the Western Cape to take in the scenery. It must be said though that this will be his toughest assignment to date. This son of the highly rated son of TRIPPI must have a shout.

Of the balance, both TEVEZ and CARRY ON ALICE must be respected and could be included in larger perms.

1st - FLY BY NIGHT (10); 2nd - CAPTAIN OF ALL (1); 3rd - ALBORAN SEA (12); 4th - COPPER PARADE (2); 5th - TRIP TEASE (3)
