Photograph decides Klawervlei Majorca Stakes
The Grade 1 Klawervlei Majorca Stakes (Weight For Age) needed a photograph to determine the winner. JET BELLE and HAMMIE'S HOOKER were slow away. The fancied COLD AS ICE broke well and briefly showed at the head of affairs. The pace was on from the start. Shortly before they approached the bend CARRY ON ALICE and ARCETRI PINK had moved up into the front line. JET SUPREME gained a number of places around the turn and moved briefly to the front.
As they moved into the home straight INARA, the eventual winner, was in sixth place and travelling well. COLD AS ICE maintained the pressure and took over the lead but was soon challenged by INARA and JET BELLE who provided the huge crowd with a finish in keeping with the great race day. CARRY ON ALICE and ARCETRI PINK faded late along with JET SUPREME.
The judges decided in favour of the Mike Bass runner, INARA, who won the Grade 1 PADDOCK STAKES at this track last time. This is now back to back Grade 1 wins for INARA. The well fancied favourite, COLD AS ICE was by no means disgraced in second and on this run should find the winner's enclosure for a Grade 1 soon. Mike Bass, top trainer for many years, knows how to win Grade 1 races and it does look as though he will be continuing to do so for quite some time still.
JET BELLE was just over a length back in third while RED FLAME caught the eye in the latter stages. Hardly noticed in the race, she produced a good finish to finish back in fourth only two lengths behind INARA. She could be worth following in a slightly weaker race in the future.
