Kingston Mines wins marathon event from start to finish
Mike De Kock sent only two runners to Cape Town for the day and won with both of them. ETRIJAAL won the Grade 1 Investec Derby earlier in the day. In the last race of the day his stayer, KINGSTON MINES won the Grade 2 J & B Urban Stayers over 2800m.
The start was a staggered one but being an entire circuit it was not going to be a crucial one. CURRENT EVENT was the first to get into stride but he was soon overtaken by the eventual winner, KINGSTON MINES. He has won from the front before, but that was over 2400m. As the began to settle down KINGSTON MINES had the lead from CURRENT EVENT, DYNASTIC POWER, MOUNTAIN MASTER. DESERT SWIRL was content to sit at the back.
The favourite, COLTRANE was midfield as they approached the 1600m pole with WAVIN' FLAG a length behind him. Before they moved around the final bend KINGSTON MINES extended his lead with both COLTRANE and WAVIN' FLAG moving up into a challenging position. There was still around two dozen lengths that separated first to last.
As they hit the top of the straight KINGSTON MINES did have some pressure applied to him with CURRENT EVENT and MOUNTAIN MASTER getting their second wind. SHINGWEDZI passed a number of horses around the turn and had something of a sniff. COLTRANE also found a good finish but KINGSTON MINES never threw in the towel and even though COLTRANE threatened close home, he still had enough in reserve. SHINGWEDZI ran on well with DYNASTIC POWER to fill the quartet places.
