Grade 1 S A CLASSIC For 3 year-olds (2nd Leg of SA Triple Crown) - Grade 1 double for trainer Sean Tarry
The third and final Grade 1 race of the day ended up as being a double for trainer Sean Tarry who must now be eyeing the trainer's championship for 2014/5. This was a star studded field that included the unbeaten ERTIJAAL and the ever consistent HARRY'S SON. What they never expected was their chances being scuttled by FRENCH NAVY who won a great race. he was superbly ridden by Raymond Danielson who timed his finish to perfection.
The start was an even one with ARNISTON and AMSTERDAM showing up early. The two runners at the top of the betting boards, ERTIJAAL and HARRY'S SON tagged one another right up until the latter stages. It must be said that the warning signs for a FRENCH NAVY were there in his latest run when running on after a sluggish start to finish half a length behind HARRY'S SON last time in the Gauteng Guineas.
Leading them into the home straight was DEPUTY JUD who was able to stay on for third. The excitement took place on the outside of the track where HARRY'S SON looked the winner with four hundred metres to go. DEPUTY JUD remained in contention but the eventual winner, FRENCH NAVY, exploded between horses to take the honours. AMSTERDAM finished well to take second place from a game DEPUTY JUD. The reserve runner UNPARALLELED showed that his win in the Dingaans was no fluke and finished fourth. HARRY'S SON was not disgraced in fifth. ERTIJAAL finished sown filed and this is not a refection of his ability.
