Hugh Bowman lands the Nathan Berry Medal

Champion Sydney jockey Hugh Bowman has won his first Nathan Berry Medal in a dramatic finish – ending The Championships equal on eight points alongside international rider Joao Moreira. However, Moreira failed to ride a winner over the two days of The Championships with Bowman booting home two in the 12-race series – Delectation today and Pride of Dubai on Monday – to claim the prestigious Medal.“This is a real honour to win the Nathan Berry Medal,” Hugh Bowman said. “Nathan was great friend to us all and it’s obviously an award that is close to our heart.”

Joao Moreira was thereabouts all day but failed to land a winner, finishing second on Winx in the Seven News Australian Oaks, second on Catkins in the Cellarbrations Queen of the Turf Stakes and third on Royal Descent in the Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes. The Nathan Berry Medal – named in memory of the former top jockey who passed away last year – is awarded to the most successful jockey over the 12 races of The Championships. The Nathan Berry Medal is unique as it features his initials ‘NJB’ on the medal in the same font Nathan displayed on his racing jodhpurs, and is adorned by a dark & light blue ribbon – the colours he carried on Unencumbered. The final points table at the completion of The Championships Day 2:-8 Hugh BOWMAN, Joao MOREIRA7 James McDONALD 5.5 Damien OLIVER5 Kerrin McEVOY
