Grade 1 LAURIE JAFFEE EMPRESS CLUB STAKES - MAJMU confirms favouritism
Prior to the running of this race the Mike De Kock yard had already visited the number one box on two occasions today. Those who had backed against MAJMU winning would have run for cover after they had witnessed the ease with which the two winners had arrived.
BANBURY was the first to show from TAMANEE in what appeared to be a level break. MAJMU was no more than midfield early on about three lengths adrift. The start was reviewed immediately after the race to check the start of the second favourite, SAME JURISDICTION, who never ran to her usual level and finished closer to last than first. (After the review the stipes decided to declare SAME JURISDICTION as non-runner and this run will not count.)
The Sean Tarry trained TAMANEE assumed the lead after about 200m from SMART CALL, BANBURY and MAJMU, who was perfectly placed throughout the race. ARCETRI PINK also showed early on but failed to find any extra.
The order stayed pretty much the same until the 300m mark when the imposing filly MAJMU came to contest the lead from TAMANEE. Stable companion of TAMANEE, TROPHY WIFE began to ran on late but her effort came far too late and MAJMU held on to win by a comfortable 2½ lengths. TAMANEE stayed on for third and the fast finishing Mike Bass runner, HAMMIES HOOKER.
This was an excellent win by the daughter of REDOUTE'S CHOICE as she was reported before the race to be short of 100% fitness. Her exploits over the next few months have a mouth-watering appeal. Will she be seen overseas thereafter?
