S A DERBY (Grade 1) - LEGAL EAGLE wins the marathon SA Derby in fine style
Owners Ingrid and Markus Jooste landed their first feature race of the afternoon when their three year old son of GREYS INN drew away to win the marathon event by three lengths. Having won the Derby Trial three weeks ago, it would have not come as too much of a surprise that the Sean Tarry trained horse won this race. Even though the Derby Trial was over 2000m, it was evident that he would relish the extra trip. It was revealed just prior to the start of the race that trainer Mike De Kock was unsure about ERTIJAAL and whether or not to scratch him as the going at the start of the meeting was posted as soft. Before they raced in this race it had been posted as good to soft.
The start was a good one. The other Mike De Kock runner, KARRAAR set a good pace for most of the race. DIESEL JET and DANTE'S LEGACY were first to show. At the 1600m mark, KARRAAR held a three length advantage over AMSTERDAM, DANCE KID and AL COUTURE. ERTIJAAL was well placed throughout, a few lngths ahead of one of his market rivals, FRENCH NAVY.
KARRAAR led them into the home straight but his job was done after extending his lead momentarily. LEGAL EAGLE moved up along the outside running rail. DEPUTY JUD also moved up menacingly with ERTIJAAL and FRENCH NAVY finishing well. The latter two did have to ease at the 200m mark and one could have a case for both.
Take nothing away from the winner, trained by Sean Tarry and well ridden by Anton Marcus, LEGAL EAGLE. DEPUTY JUD ran a very good race in second and the confidence displayed by the connections were well founded.
LEGAL EAGLE has now earned just short of R1,5 million
